Education For Every Girls
District
Ajmer

Rajasthan
In the state of Rajasthan, the birth of a girl child is not as warmly welcomed as that of a boy. Gender discrimination is prevalent both at home and in schools. According to data from DISE (District Information System for Education), in 2008-09, there were 1.05 million girls enrolled in Class I. However, by 2016-17, the number of girls enrolled in Class IX dropped significantly to only 530,000. This indicates that nearly half of the girls drop out before reaching secondary school. A survey conducted by Rajasthan Samgrah Kalyan Sansthan reveals the numerous challenges faced by these children in pursuit of education. The economic conditions of their families often prevent parents from affording school expenses such as study materials, leading many intelligent, talented, and ambitious students to abandon their education. Moreover, the recent pandemic has worsened the financial situation of these families, further inhibiting the girl child from acquiring essential educational materials. Addressing this pressing issue, the promotion of girl child education becomes paramount. Census data from 2011 shows that the literacy rate in rural areas of Ajmer district is 59.13%. Male literacy stands at 76.45%, while female literacy lags at 41.29%. This discrepancy underscores the dominance of a male-dominated society. To combat these challenges and support marginalized girls in rural areas, Rajasthan Samgrah Kalyan Sansthan initiates a comprehensive program. They provide educational materials such as school bags, notebooks, pens, pencils, colors, books, school uniforms, shoes, socks, and stationery kits. Additionally, they offer hygiene kits- sanitary napkins, handkerchiefs, hair oil, buckets, cloth washing soap, bathing soap, toothbrush and paste sets, nail cutters, etc. To address nutritional needs, nutrition kits containing items like black gram, soybean, moong dal, chawla, and rajma are also distributed. The selection process for girl beneficiaries is meticulously

In Rajasthan, the birth of a girl child is often not celebrated like that of a boy. Gender discrimination at home and in schools continues to create serious barriers to girls’ education. According to DISE data, 1.05 million girls were enrolled in Class I in 2008–09, but only 530,000 reached Class IX in 2016–17, indicating that nearly half dropped out before secondary school.
Surveys by Rajasthan Samgrah Kalyan Sansthan (RSKS India) found that poverty, social restrictions and the inability to afford educational materials often force intelligent and ambitious girls to discontinue their studies. The pandemic further reduced household incomes and limited access to essential educational and hygiene supplies.
As per Census 2011, rural literacy in Ajmer district was 59.13%, with male literacy at 76.45% and female literacy at only 41.29%. This wide gender gap highlights the urgent need to promote girls’ education.
RSKS India therefore implements an integrated education programme for marginalized rural girls. Beneficiaries are selected through household visits, family assessments and verification of school performance. Each girl receives one year of educational support, including a school bag, notebooks, books, stationery, uniform, shoes and socks.
Girls also receive hygiene kits containing sanitary napkins, soaps, hair oil, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other personal-care items, as well as nutrition kits containing pulses, soybean, black gram and rajma.
Monthly sessions are conducted on WASH, menstrual hygiene, sexual and reproductive health, balanced diets and nutrition. The RSKS India team regularly monitors school attendance, academic progress and the effective use of materials.
Through sustained year-long support, the initiative enables disadvantaged girls to attend school regularly, continue their education with dignity and confidence, and build a better future.
