Theory of Change

Classroom hunger affects children’s ability to learn and grow. To solve this challenge, Akshaya Patra began the Food for Education initiative which is continuously making an effort to enable children from over 22,367 schools in India.

Milestones & Track Record

The Akshaya Patra kitchen provides mid-day meals in around 515 schools in and around
Ahmedabad catering to about 1,50,000 school children. The kitchen has centralized steam
cooking facility, with assembly line process like other TAPF kitchens. The food preparation
starts as early 4 in the morning, the total time taken to cook meals is 3-4 hours. By 9 am the
meals are ready in the vans to be sent to the schools. The prepared food is packed in steel

drums, the temperature of the food is checked on delivery at school. The Ahmedabad TAPF
kitchen was well maintained and every aspect under observation scored on the higher side.
The parents and headmaster expressed satisfaction with the efficiency and regularity shown
by TAPF. Almost all teachers and headmasters pointed out that TAPF had put an effective
grievance redressal mechanism in place.
Automation of food preparation has a disadvantage that the kitchen cannot bring many
variations in the menu. The parents in Ahmedabad are unaware of TAPF being the food
provider for meals to their children. Parents have opted to not let children MDM at school
because of the same taste of meals every day.

Donor Testimonial

“We in RMS India are delighted to partner with The Akshaya Patra Foundation to provide free mid-day meals to all school-going children. We understand that there is a pattern – the wholesome food act as incentive for parents to send children to school; and once the children are at school, they receive both nutrition and education. Additionally, it further supports education by countering classroom hunger. I was truly amazed to see the Super Kitchens of Akshaya Patra and the level of quality standards maintained by the team. Kudos to the entire team and wish together we reach out to billions of children to feed them and nurture their future.”

Sophia CSR Lead, RMS India
"Hunger is not a natural disaster but man-made one to a large extent. Hence, I feel, it is our duty to make India hunger-free. It was pleasant to know about the implementation of the Mid-Day Meal Programme by The Akshaya Patra Foundation. The modus operandi and functioning of this programme deeply touched my heart as I, at Galway Foundation, strongly believe in equal distribution of opportunity which is inevitable to fulfil anyone’s dream. I strongly believe only a hunger-free child can build a strong India. That is why, the Galway Foundation decided to join hands with The Akshaya Patra Foundation to ensure every child in India is free from hunger."
