Caring with Colour is dedicated to improving student learning outcomes by improving classroom and broader educational ecosystem factors. Key infl Read moreuences in the classroom include the quality of teaching resources, teachers' diverse skill sets, and approaches to instructional practices. Effective resources like experiential lesson plans, project-based learning modules can enhance lessons, while skilled teachers create dynamic learning environments. Beyond the classroom, ecosystem factors play a crucial role in supporting educational success. These include a solid monitoring framework for teaching quality and student performance, comprehensive teacher training programmes, mentoring systems for ongoing support, and a culture of unified goal setting within the education department. We focus on developing high-quality teaching materials and building partnerships with the education department. These collaborations help position educational officers as change agents, empowering teachers and transforming classroom practices. By engaging with teachers and government bodies, we aim for systemic, sustainable changes in public education. Our integrated approach to classroom and ecosystem factors promotes long-lasting improvements in student learning outcomes.
Issue
In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, education must embrace a multi-dimensional approach, placing the development of 21st-century skills at the forefront. The National Education Policy of India (2020) highlights critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration as essential curriculum goals. Of the 248 million school-going children, 133.5 million, or 50.5%, attend Government schools (Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE+) 2023-24, Ministry of Education). Thus, nearly half of India's school population is enrolled in government schools. However, the concerning trend has emerged regarding literacy levels among students in Karnataka. According to a recent study, a significant percentage of first-grade students struggle with basic literacy skills. While 32.7% of these students are unable to recognize letters, 39.8% can read letters but are unable to read words. This indicates a fundamental gap in early literacy education. The situation does not improve as students advance through grades. Among fifth-standard students, a mere 34% can read at the second-standard level, raising alarm about the overall proficiency in reading and comprehension skills. These findings, derived from research across all 30 districts in Karnataka, highlight the urgent need for effective educational strategies to enhance literacy rates and ensure that students possess the necessary skills to progress in their academic journeys. 1) The literacy rate in the region is 63.71% (lower than the average of 75.36%) 2) 115 govt schools reported ZERO enrolment 3) 65% of govt schools are Single Teacher Institutes.
Action
Our vision is for all children in India to experience joyful and experiential learning environments that not only help them grasp academic concepts better, but also equip them with 21st-century skills needed for future success. Caring with Colour commits to enhancing student learning outcomes at the primary school level by empowering teachers to improve their classroom teaching practices. To achieve this, we have developed a comprehensive three-part solution aimed at supporting teachers in transitioning from traditional teaching methods to experiential practices. 1) Content: Design and Create : CwC continuously strives to create a variety of experiential teaching resources, including lesson plans, worksheets, project-based learning modules, teacher manuals, and training handbooks. These resources are developed through a thorough research process and are available in local Indian languages at no cost, covering crucial subjects such as Mathematics, Science, and English. 2) System Strengthening: Teacher Training Programme : CwC facilitates and conducts experiential teacher training programmes on Maths , English and Science, that employ effective instructional design strategies and utilize various technology platforms for online, in-person, and blended learning formats based on specific operational needs to enhance the teaching-learning process in government schools. 3) Impact & Sustainability: Review and Assessments : CwC understands the importance of sustainability and to ensure continued impact, we focus on cultivating a supportive environment for teachers by training department officials (Teacher Mentors) to act as catalysts for change in teaching practices. We implement robust monitoring systems for these officials, providing data analytics to identify classroom gaps and evaluate the success of our solutions and projects, along with tools for effectiveness reviews and process improvements. 4) Immersive: Teachopia (The Open-Source Resource App): Teachopia is at the heart of all our initiatives, it’s a free technology platform that delivers experiential teaching content to teachers and is also accessible to students and parents. Teachopia empowers educational authorities as well with tools for data collection, analysis, and visualization. All our projects are researched, designed and implemented in association with the education department to have maximum impact and longevity. Our solutions are developed in close collaboration with education department personnel to ensure their successful adoption, scalability, and sustainability. Currently, over 23,000 government schoolteachers in Karnataka are using Teachopia, which is notably the only app in the region offering experiential teaching-learning content in local languages.

Sanchalana brings teachers of Math, Science, and English from different Hoblis in a Block five times a year.
The platform is supplemented by the resources developed by our team such as worksheets and lesson plans which support teachers in exploring experiential learning and cultivating 21st century skills among students. The Sanchalana session allows teachers to both learn new methods and share ideas with their colleagues in a fun and friendly environment.
-
Spoken English Programme
