Issue

Remoteness and limited market access in rural areas hinder economic growth. Key challenges include inadequate skills, low production scalability, inconsistent SHG output, and poor logistics. A market-led approach with technology adoption, incubation, and better promotion is needed to enhance visibility and sales. Chemical farming practices are leading to deteriorating health, unstable incomes, and the under recognition of women's contributions in agriculture, ultimately affecting the overall well-being of the community. India faces a severe shortage of mental health services, with 1 in 7 affected by mental disorders and a high suicide rate of 21.1 per 100,000 population. With only 3,800 psychiatrists and 900 clinical psychologists, there's a significant gap in the need for 13,500 psychiatrists and 20,250 clinical psychologists. This mental health crisis contributes to a projected economic loss of USD 1.03 trillion from 2012 to 2030. India's vulnerability to climate change has led to 573 extreme weather events between 1970 and 2021, causing 1,38,377 deaths and widespread destruction. With 3 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions and 2.5 tons per person, erratic rainfall, cyclones, and carbon emissions have displaced thousands, disrupted education, and damaged livelihoods, especially in agriculture. Climate change has also led to mental health issues, forced early marriages, and created climate refugees, placing a heavy economic and social burden on the country. The lack of life and employability skills among rural youth, who make up 45.9% of the Indian workforce, leads to high unemployment (23.2% in 2022) and underemployment. Despite 46.2% of Indian youth being employable, 93.7% of rural youth lack vocational training, and 75% of companies report a skill gap in new hires. This gap, along with a 50% wage disparity between rural and urban areas, reflects the mismatch between education and job market demands.

Action

To address economic challenges faced by rural SHGs, we have developed an online e-commerce platform for selling their products. The plan includes conducting a market scan to identify demand and potential buyers, followed by creating a roll-out strategy for the platform. Resources will be mobilized for infrastructure development and digital operations. SHGs will receive training in e-commerce, with support provided from onboarding to fulfilment. Ongoing operational assistance and targeted marketing campaigns will enhance visibility and sales. To enhance health outcomes and boost women’s income, we implement natural farming practices. This approach will improve soil health, increase crop yields, and promote overall well-being. We will provide health education, empower women through skill development and value addition, and ensure inclusive community participation in agriculture. Regular monitoring will assess the impact on health, income, and well-being. To address the growing mental health crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have established the "Voice That Cares" helpline at 8448 8448 45. Launched in 2021, this volunteer-driven service provides Psychological First Aid and offers support in English, Hindi, and Telugu from 9 am to 9 pm, and in Gujarati, Tamil, and Kannada from 4 pm to 9 pm, 365 days a year, to meet the community's unmet mental health needs. To address climate change, we develop and implement a climate change curriculum to enhance scientific understanding among students and teachers. This includes promoting awareness through pilot models like school forests, kitchen gardens, circular systems, rainwater harvesting, and weather stations. We will conduct experiential learning tours on ecology, toxic and sustainable models, and facilitate data sharing to drive behavior change and climate action among youth, children, and other stakeholders. To increase employability and incomes for rural youth, we provide essential life and employability skills through targeted education on sector-specific skills, soft skills, and mental resilience, supported by a focused intervention plan. To provide immediate support, we deliver humanitarian aid and relief to affected communities, addressing urgent needs and ensuring timely assistance for recovery and stability.

Impact

Our interventions have positively impacted 99,329 beneficiaries across all focus sectors—Health, Education, Environment, Life Skills, and Economic Empowerment—demonstrating significant progress and transformative outcomes.

Programs

  • Economic Empowerment - E Village Market

Our program successfully built self-reliant communities by leveraging technology to enhance productivity and market access for rural women SHGs. We facilitated online marketing to enable SHGs to effectively promote their products and provided training and resources in digital literacy, financial management, product development, and operations. Key interventions included capacity building on data collection, onboarding, payment processing, and the establishment of fulfillment centers, which increased income and employment opportunities year-round.

  • Economic Empowerment - Project Vishwas

Our project has been empowering rural women economically through agriculture and natural resource management. We are providing ongoing training in sustainable farming practices, including soil fertility, health, nutrition, multi-cropping, and reducing external inputs. The program emphasizes capacity building with hands-on training in sustainable farming, herbal product creation, and small enterprise setup and management. This approach equips women to produce and add value to herbal items and explore small business opportunities, continually enhancing their economic independence.

  • Health - Voice That Cares

Our ongoing program, "Voice That Cares," launched in 2021, aims to build a mentally resilient nation by addressing the growing mental health needs exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. We have established a Mental Health Helpline and developed the necessary infrastructure and technology. The program includes volunteer identification, training, and certification in counseling, as well as providing online Psycho-Social and Psychological First Aid services. We also escalate cases to psychologists, conduct community needs assessments, raise mental health awareness, and ensure continuous monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.

  • Environment - Awareness Campaign

Our project engaged college youth in environmental protection, resulting in a direct impact on their behaviors and attitudes, and potentially influencing their parents, relatives, families, and surroundings. The awareness campaign was a strategic effort to unite youth, foster strong environmental consciousness, and encourage them to take a leading role in long-term sustainability plans for conserving the Earth. We have seen significant progress and aim to continue these efforts in the future to strengthen environmental stewardship among the younger generation.

  • Education - Climate Resilient Schools

Our ongoing project in Karnataka, "Climate Resilient Schools aiming at a Climate Smart Generation," is dedicated to creating a climate-conscious youth. We are developing a Climate Change Curriculum, training teachers, and conducting awareness sessions for students. The initiative also includes setting up weather stations, sharing educational podcasts with parents and students, and organizing exposure tours such as toxic tours, sustainable models tours, and ecology tours. These comprehensive efforts aim to deepen climate understanding and encourage proactive environmental stewardship among the youth.

  • Life Skills - Finishing school programs

Our Finishing Schools program, "Empowering Youth: Skilling and Resilience for Endless Possibilities," has provided training in sector-specific skills and essential soft and employability skills to identified youth. This initiative aimed to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, as well as full and productive employment. Additionally, we focused on building mental resilience among participants. With the positive outcomes achieved, we are committed to continuing these efforts to further enhance youth skills and resilience for long-term success.

  • Disaster Relief and Response

We are committed to providing humanitarian aid during times of disaster, as exemplified by our COVID-19 response. Our program includes infrastructure support to hospitals, distribution of essential food supplies, provision of masks, and awareness campaigns on vaccination, safety, and hygiene. We also offer mental health support to victims and their families, ensuring effective response and relief to communities affected by disasters.
