NeevJivan Foundation is an NGO working with a focus on skill development and vocational training with tribal women in rural Maharashtra. It is our Read more endeavour to create alternate sources of income and opportunities of sustainable livelihood for them in their villages so that they do not have to migrate to the cities in search of better opportunities. In the long run, it is our goal to make her self-reliant & financially independent so that she can contribute to the finances of her family which can help in stopping the migration of her family members. We encourage leaders who not only generate employment opportunities for themselves, but also other women in their respective villages.
Issue
Sundari has 3 children and aging in-laws staying at her home in Modgaon village. She aspires for a pucca house of her own, wants her children to be educated and lead a healthy life. But the earning from agriculture which is their primary source of income is not enough to make this happen. Hence, for almost 8 months in a year, she and her husband leave their family behind and migrate to Silvassa and work as unskilled labourers at a brick making unit. This is the story of thousands of tribals living in Jawhar and Dahanu talukas in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. Due to scarcity of water they run one crop cycle, which results in an annual income of approximately Rs. 60,000/- (MHI Rs. 5,000/-). This is hardly enough to meet the basic needs of the family and hence the people migrate to the cities in search of alternate income. The situation is similar in many states, particularly where people depend on rainfall for their crops, e.g. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh (Western). People in these areas have been migrating to the cities for generations seeking alternate sources of income.
Action
It is our endeavour to create opportunities for sustainable livelihood in their villages so that the women become self-reliant and can contribute to the finances of their families and they not have to migrate to the cities. We have developed a robust operating model to create a vocation (other than agriculture) in every household in a village so that there is an alternate source of income in every family. 1. Technical training on vocation of choice: We support 20+ vocations through our knowledge partners. 2. Entrepreneurship Skills: This module covers basic business concepts and the same is taught through fun & games, case studies, customer interactions, etc. 3. Facilitate access to funds: Provide access to funds through government schemes, corporates (CSR), PMEGP/CMEGP, Crowd Funding, etc to help the SHGs start micro business. 4. Set up micro business units: On receipt of funds, we help them buy machines, raw materials, set up shopfloor, packaging, branding, regulatory compliances, etc 5. Support for 10-12 months to stabilize operations: Support at this stage is crucial in terms of ensuring quality production and market linkage. The alternate income combined with better working conditions has encouraged many women to stay back in their villages.
