Indian Yards was established to provide employment, income and a livelihood to poor women. It trains these women from tea-estate communities in the ar Read moret of macramé i.e. making handicrafts out of knotting yarn. It works for the upliftment of indigenous tribes on the Nilgiri mountains. Its efforts are not just about making and selling products but a medium through which women from similar walks of life or communities come together, learn, share and flourish. This is a means to providing these women a collective strength through the process of creating handicrafts. Indian Yards first skills the women in the art of macrame free of cost and then provide them with all the raw material they need to create handicrafts. It buys back the produce at a fair price thereby enabling them with a steady livelihood. The products include items for wall décor, garden décor, table and dining, home furnishing and lifestyle accessories. It maintains an online website displaying all the products where customers can order online and purchase chosen products which is delivered to them in eco-friendly packaging. It also promotes the art of macrame among the general public by offering DIY kits and macrame art supplies which include natural cotton yarn sourced from recycled cloth from the fashion and textile industry and wood from responsibly managed forests.
