The Lighthouse Project aims to motivate working professionals and college students to take part in social transformation as volunteers and mentors. It Read more connects these mentors to underprivileged children, youth who may never have experienced education before. Working in partnership with Apne Aap Women’s Collective, Akanksha Foundation and Muktangan, It works to educate children in Mumbai’s red light district and slum children to make them better citizens and job ready. It invites applications from people who are interested to work and give back to society. An individual who is interested and applies for mentorship is invited over to its offices for a one-to-one conversation with a person from the organisation who assesses the applicant’s commitment and fit for the project. A half-day mentor training programme is conducted where the applicants learn about their role and are provided with activity guides to facilitate interaction with the child who is to be put under their guidance. Once the mentor is ready, They are connected, through partner organisations, to the child whom they would be guiding, based on the interests and talents of the child weekend sessions are conducted between the two. The Lighthouse team is constantly in touch with the mentor and provide support and direction to the relationship. Its curriculum focusses on teaching self-awareness and self-management, social awareness and relationship skills, critical thinking and decision making skills to the children through the volunteer mentors. It provides a platform for the child and its mentor to learn from each other. The child receives help in studies and is also prepared for social life while the mentor gains valuable experience in terms of working for the society and enabling a poor child to realise his/her dreams.
