reCharkha focuses on adding value to waste plastic and creating useful products out of it. Its team of volunteers called ‘Upcyclers’ fan out into their neighbourhoods and collect polythene bags, waste wrappers of gifts, biscuits, cookies, cereals, detergents etc. These wastes are brought to reCharka and are woven into fabric using the conventional spindle and handloom machines which later are converted into handwoven crafts and dresses employing rural women and youth. This initiative not only provides income to disadvantaged populations but also goes on to reduce pollution due to the addition of traditional designs into its products also encourages the preservation of tradition. reCharkha hosts a website on which it offers these products for sale online.
