It strives to create a community that is responsive to the evolving needs of its members while upholding the core values that define its foundation. In its diverse cultural context, it works collaboratively towards the realization of a more inclusive and humane society. FMR India's identity is rooted in the integration of people with and without intellectual disabilities. It fosters a sense of belonging within an international federation, where mutual relationships and trust in a higher power form the foundation of its collective journey. Embracing the inherent worth of each individual, it acknowledges the interconnectedness and interdependence among all members, highlighting the importance of its shared existence. It is also known as Asha Niketan, and at Asha Niketan, the focus is on empowering each person to develop and contribute their gifts to the community. As an affiliated member of L'Arche, an International Federation of Communities, FMR India aims to strengthen local communities, welcome more individuals into its life and work, advocate for disadvantaged populations, and raise awareness about the talents and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. With five communities located in Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Nandi Bazar, and Asansol, each community is governed by a dedicated local Governing Council committed to supporting the members of Asha Niketan through their voluntary time and skills.

Programs

  • Sheltered Workshops Programme

    In the Sheltered Workshops programme of FMR India, individuals have the opportunity to engage in various meaningful activities such as gardening, agriculture, crafts, and candle making, depending on the community's location. Through these workshops, they not only gain the dignity of work but also contribute to their society. The products created are sold to the wider world, allowing for outreach and enabling individuals to earn a modest wage.

  • Development Centres Programme

    In the Development Centres programme of FMR India, individuals, particularly children with intellectual disabilities, engage in therapeutic activities and development education. These centres provide a nurturing environment for individuals to explore their unique gifts and develop essential skills.

  • Outreach Programme

    In the Outreach Work programme of FMR India, assistants actively engage with the neighbourhood by visiting homes that have children with intellectual disabilities. Due to limited capacity, these outreach programmes aim to reach children who are unable to attend Asha Niketan. The assistants provide valuable technical guidance, friendship, and support to the families, contributing to the well-being and development of the children within their own homes.

  • Residential Care

    The Homes programme of FMR India offers a nurturing environment where individuals with intellectual disabilities and its assistants live together, fostering deep relationships and providing a safe space for personal expression. These homes, whether single or multiple, encourage a sense of belonging and allow individuals to explore love, healing, and personal growth. Through daily routines and shared responsibilities, each member can fully utilize their abilities and contribute creatively to the gift of life within the home community.
