    Mumbai, Maharashtra

Sakhya, originally initiated in 1987 as the Anti-dowry and Women’s Guidance Cell, was established by the College of Social Work, Nirmala Niketan, Mumb Read moreai, in collaboration with the District Vigilance Commission, Government of Maharashtra. Initially operating under the auspices of Nirmala Niketan, it evolved into an independent entity affiliated with the Nirmala Institute. Its early focus centred on addressing dowry-related issues and domestic violence. Alongside these concerns, Sakhya provided counselling, legal aid, shelter for distressed women, and conducted educational programmes on gender awareness, family life, HIV/AIDS, and value education for various communities. Currently, the Sakhya Women’s Guidance Cell primarily concentrates on promoting gender equality and justice, striving for women’s empowerment through a holistic approach. It advocates for a society where gender justice and equality are core values, enabling women to lead lives of dignity. Sakhya works to rectify power imbalances, raise awareness, and enhance women's autonomy in managing their lives, with the ultimate mission of cultivating a sense of social responsibility within society to achieve a just and equitable environment.

Notably, it actively participates in the International Week for the Elimination of Violence against Women, marked on November 25th, collaborating with the UN to raise awareness about global gender-based violence. The organisation employs diverse strategies like leaflet distribution, talks, competitions, sessions, street plays, and rallies in strategic locations, such as the "Knock the Door" campaign involving leaflet distribution within communities and street plays in public spaces.
