Waatavaran is an organisation that focuses on serving tribal communities who have been living in forests for generations but lack land rights. It work Read mores with vulnerable communities to mitigate climate change and its effects on these communities. Its primary goal is to empower these vulnerable communities by helping them secure their land rights and promoting forest protection and sustainable cultivation practices. Starting with two tribal villages in Raigad, Maharashtra, it has worked towards assisting communities in claiming their land rights under the Forest Right Act. Its aim is to secure the land rights of one million oppressed and deprived tribal and forest-dwelling communities across India. It achieves this through collaboration with Government agencies, community outreach, capacity building, data collection, mapping of land plots, and promoting sustainable natural resource management practices. Furthermore, it runs climate awareness campaigns in Mumbai, to mobilize youth and spread awareness.

  • Biodiversity By The Bay Programme

    District

    The Biodiversity by the Bay campaign was launched, aiming to mobilize young Mumbaikars as climate leaders and champions for sustainable policy-making. The campaign organised webinars on wetland conservation, highlighting the vulnerabilities of existing management and conservation laws. It emphasized the role of youth in protecting wetlands. Additionally, the campaign promoted the People's Biodiversity Register as a means of involving local communities in biodiversity conservation. It also provided a platform for young architecture and planning students to present their ideas on sustainable development for Mumbai. These initiatives seek to create a climate movement and foster a more inclusive and environmentally conscious city for the future.

  • Clean Air for All Programme

    Waatavaran's Clean Air For All is a campaign in Maharashtra, India, focused on addressing air pollution and raising awareness about its impact on health and the environment. The campaign employs various community engagement strategies, such as the "Billboard that Breathes" which visually represents air pollution's effect on human health. The Breathless photo project aims to humanize the issue by sharing stories of individuals affected by pollution. The #SaalBhar60 initiative encourages citizens to demand clean air throughout the year and holds virtual convenings to discuss action plans. Policy advocacy is another key aspect, engaging with policymakers at various levels to shape effective policies. Action-led research involves continuous monitoring of air quality and pinpointing pollution sources to inform policy-making and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented measures.
