The Smokeless Cookstove Foundation (SCF) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to addressing Household Air Pollution. Through its training program, t Read morehe Smokeless Cookstove Revolution, it teaches rural, migrant, and tribal communities how to create an efficient and low-cost cookstove using Rocket Stove Technology. This stove significantly reduces indoor emissions and fuel usage, improving efficiency and freeing up time for other activities like work or education. Made from locally available materials like mud, grass, and cow dung, the stove's base, known as the doughnut, is formed using inexpensive metal moulds. While not competing with other market models, this solution offers immediate adaptability and costs little to implement. SCF's Smokeless Cookstove Revolution programme trains communities to make efficient, low-cost cookstoves that reduce indoor pollution and fuel usage. These stoves, based on Rocket Stove Technology, use locally available materials like mud and cow dung to create a base called the doughnut. By employing metal moulds costing less than INR 500, communities can produce hundreds of stoves. This solution doesn't directly compete with other improved cookstove models but offers an immediate, no-cost alternative, enhancing efficiency and improving livelihoods by freeing up time for other activities.

Programs

  • Field Programmes

SCF conducts the Smokeless Cookstove Revolution, training rural, migrant, and tribal communities to craft virtually cost-free, efficient cookstoves using Rocket Stove Technology. These stoves reduce smoke output, fuel usage, and cooking time, allowing families to focus on livelihood activities. Materials like mud, grass, and cow dung are used, with metal moulds forming the base. While not competing with market models, this solution offers immediate adaptability at no cost. Additionally, SCF provides community-sized chulhas to conscious agricultural and dairy farms, aiming to influence nearby communities towards sustainable practices, minimizing reliance on firewood.

  • Facilitation Programme

During the pandemic, SCF's fieldwork halted, allowing them to delve deeper into the clean cooking sector. It compiled reports for its partner enterprise, Himalayan Rocket Stove, and transitioned into a facilitator role within the sector. SCF now bridges the gap between solution providers and user communities, facilitating the implementation of various clean cooking solutions, including biomass, solar, and biogas-based options. It focuses on capacity building for grassroots NGOs, community-based communication for behaviour change, and integrating clean fuel propositions into comprehensive clean cooking programmes.
