About

  • Since

    2008

FAT is a young women-led not‐for‐profit working towards bridging the gender gap in technology access and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and m Read moreathematics) education for marginalised adolescent girls in India. Our Vision: Every girl reclaims her right to STEM and uses it to drive collective leadership to build sustainable communities. Our Mission: To build collective leadership of girls so they can use technical tools, STEM innovation and feminist awareness, to bring sustainable change in their lives and communities.

Issue

Even today in India, girls from marginalised and vulnerable communities remain isolated from 21st-century skills, awareness of their rights and dignified work because of an ever-growing gender gap in technology access and STEM education. This limits their ability to break out of the cycle of gender oppression and poverty, and thus defeats our collective efforts towards building a gender just society.

Action

We spark change at the grassroots level through our programs: 1. Young Women's Leadership Program (YWLP) Level 1 via Community Tech Centers (CTC): 1-year program for girls aged 14-18 promoting self-exploration, technical proficiency, human rights, and personal agency. Level 2 via Peer Support Groups: Cultivates collective leadership in girls aged 16-19 through advanced technical skills, community advocacy, and campaign execution. 2. Girls in STEM Program (GiSTEMP) Level 1 via Community Jugaad Labs (CJL): 2-year program for girls aged 10-13 combining hands-on technical sessions, life skills workshops, exposure visits, and role model introduction. Level 2 via Girls' MakerSpaces: Pilot stage program for girls aged 14-19 to explore, design, and experiment with latest technical tools. 3. Collectivisation Initiative: Launched in April 2022, 3-year program represents Level 3 of leadership training in the FAT model.

Impact

At FAT, we believe that the most effective way to advance gender equality is by investing in marginalised girls’ and young women’s feminist leadership so that they can come together to solve their own problems and work towards sustainable change within their own communities. For this, they need technology access and STEM education integrated with feminist leadership building. All of FAT’s core programs are geared towards STEM EDUCATION, FEMINIST LEADERSHIP, and DIGITAL RIGHTS. The programs are designed to offer participating girls three levels of leadership development, allowing them to evolve into young women leaders throughout their multi-year engagement. Each level emphasises distinct technical and leadership skills, facilitating individual growth at each stage. While completion of all levels is not mandatory, participants acquire specific skills even if they discontinue their journey at any level. Those who continue through all three leadership levels ultimately transform into young women changemakers growing the FAT Model.

Vision & Mission

Vision: Every girl reclaims her right to STEM and uses it to drive collective leadership to build sustainable communities. Mission: To build collective leadership of girls so they can use technical tools, STEM innovation and feminist awareness, to bring sustainable change in their lives and communities.

Programs

  • Collectivisation Initiative

Brings together young women (18 to 35 years of age) to form collectives that run the previous 2 programs in their own communities. This way, the young women kick-start an entrepreneurial journey together with their peers as a sustainable livelihood for themselves while continuing their leadership for social change by working with adolescent girls in their communities.

  • Girls In STEM

Provides STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to marginalised girls aged 10 - 19 years of age, through hands-on teaching methods and fun alternative tools. This way of learning not only promotes new STEM skills but also breaks their internalised gender beliefs regarding STEM learning and STEM careers for women.

  • Young Women's Leadership Program

Promotes digital rights, STEM awareness and leadership for marginalised girls and young women between 14 - 25 years of age by intertwining digital literacy with feminist leadership building training. This program helps participants develop agency to fight injustices in their lives, collectivise to advocate for gender equality within their communities and improve their economic prospects with 21st-century skills.

Milestones & Track Record

FAT received its first official grant in 2010, started a Tech Center for girls in 2010, began school interventions in 2013, and is transitioning to a network of community collectives led by young women by 2024.
