The 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery intends to establish a more formalized archive in Bangalore, serving as a comprehensive resource for artists, curators Read more, and cultural practitioners. The goal is to conduct extensive research, documentation, and compilation of information, resulting in a physical archive situated at 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery. This archive houses a collection of past projects created by artists and curators associated with the city, while also exploring various historical aspects beyond art and culture, encompassing local communities. It aims to inspire students, artists, and curators to delve into Bangalore's diverse micro-narratives, fostering conversations, projects, and interventions that revolve around the city. Its projects encompass a wide range of materials, including maps, literature, photo & art books, photographs, films, videos, and personal archives from contributors. The gallery has hosted artists from Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka in collaboration with Khoj in Delhi. Exhibitions on Tibetan culture in exile and the Sethusamudram Project, which brings together Indian and Sri Lankan artists, have also been featured. Art workshops for underprivileged children, monthly talks by esteemed artists and historians, and screenings of distinctive films followed by engaging filmmaker discussions have been organized. The gallery has welcomed artists from every continent and numerous countries globally.

  • Urban Fabric Project

    In collaboration with Bangalore artists, 1Shanthiroad Studio has been working on the theme of "Urban Fabric," funded by the India Foundation for the Arts (IFA). This community project aims to document Bangalore's cultural diversity and cosmopolitanism through the lens of fabric. It explores the transitions from handlooms to power looms, and from hand-tailoring to garment factories. Artists involved in the project examine labour, materials, craft skills, micro-narratives, and textiles within the city. The art project is supported by IFA, Project 560, Goethe-Institut / Max Muller Bhavan, and the venue is sponsored by Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.

  • The Bengaluru Postcard Project

    The Bengaluru Postcard Project reexamines the postcard format, nostalgically capturing the city's history, people, and events. Spanning 120 years, from the 1898 plague to the pandemic of 2020, the project delves into Bangalore's cosmopolitan nature, diverse neighbourhoods, and multilingual inhabitants. Incorporating everyday vocabulary, urban legends, and oral narratives, the postcards go beyond factual history. The project archives postcards from the colonial era to the present times, collecting existing images within the timeline while also reimagining and commissioning artists to create new ones, including fictional or nonexistent elements.

  • Namma Ooru, Namma Janna – Noora Ondu (101) Kathegalu

    Namma Ooru, Namma Jana101stories (Project 560- IFA) maps Bangalore through personal experiences, exploring favourite landmarks, eateries, scents, and navigation in the city. It fosters conversations and highlights diverse local identities, coordinated by Suresh Jayaram and a team from 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery. This public art project, "Namma Ooru, Namma Jana – Noora Ondu (101) kathegalu," is supported by India Foundation for the Arts.

  • Bangalore, Inside/ Out: A Curated Photography Project

    "Bangalore, Inside/Out" explores the power of photography to grant access to hidden realms and intimate subjects. The exhibition shifts the focus inward, combining fiction and fantasy to delve into personal stories, relationships, family histories, and interior spaces within Bangalore. Through these narratives, it probes the city's transformations and conflicts, prompting deeper inquiries.

  • Bangalore Connect Programme

    "Bangalore Connect" is a curated art project spanning fifteen months, comprising six sub-projects. It directly contributes to the archive, encompassing maps, literature, photo & art books, films, videos, and personal archives from various contributors.
