Ek Saath Foundation in collaboration with BMC F - North ward aims at turning the slum settlement in Kokari, Wadala, into a zero waste to landfill settlement. Kokari Agar Baithi Chawl is a settlement that consists of 4000 households with a population of 20,000+. Ward 174 and 176 of F - North ward is divided by a nullah which is a tributary of the Mithi river, filled with waste water and solid waste dumped by the people living around the nullah due to inadequate waste management facilities. This not only obstructs the flow of waste water but is also home to a number of diseases. During monsoon due to heavy waste dumping, the nullah over flows. Additionally, this nullah along with the waste meets the ocean in Mahul, located in the eastern suburbs of the city. Hence, it is a need of the hour to convert the community into a zero waste to landfill settlement.
This will not only reduce the waste entering the nullah, but also prevent the waste entering the landfill or staying in and around the community, and better the living conditions of people. -

Elephanta Island (Gharapuri), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Maharashtra’s top tourist destinations, faces serious waste management and water scarcity issues that threaten its fragile ecosystem and cultural heritage. Despite attracting thousands of visitors daily, the island lacks adequate infrastructure to manage its growing waste and sanitation needs.
To address this, Ek Saath – The Earth Foundation, in partnership with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), launched the GEM project—a holistic initiative focused on sustainable waste management, water conservation, infrastructure development, and community engagement.
With support from Rossari Biotech to refurbish toilets and insights from a research expert Ms. Niroppama Sawant, the project also considers local livelihoods and demographic realities. GEM not only aims to protect Elephanta’s environment and heritage but also to improve the quality of life for its 500–600 residents by creating long-term, sustainable solutions.
