About

A not for profit, socio-environmental enterprise for everything elephant. The Real Elephant Collective started a unique initiative to spread awareness Read more about elephants and nature conservation. It collaborates with indigenous artists who convert the invasive Lantana camara weed to craft lifelike wild elephants native to South Indian forests. These elephants have been installed in various cities around the world where they are very well received. The proceeds garnered from this exhibition contribute to the advancement of coexistence efforts between humans and the natural world. Conceived by Ruth Ganesh and Tarsh Thekaekara, and brought to life by the design expertise of Shubhra Nayar, this exhibition is preceded by Ruth's distinctive large-scale sculpture fundraising events, Tarsh's engagement with elephants, lantana, and his rapport with indigenous artisans, and Shubhra's contributions in design for performance and the realm of larger-than-life puppetry.

Programs

  • Lantana Elephants: Combating an Invasive Weed for Conservation

The rampant spread of the invasive weed Lantana camara has encroached upon forests worldwide. The organisation endeavours to craft lantana elephants, a creative response to mitigate this issue. By creating these elephants, we simultaneously address the challenge of weed-infested forests, offer livelihood opportunities to adivasi families, and advocate for the crucial cause of nature conservation.
This collaborative project is conducted in partnership with Elephant Family, a global non-governmental organization dedicated to safeguarding the Asian elephant from the brink of extinction in its natural habitat. The proceeds generated from the sale of these unique elephants will be channelled towards funding coexistence initiatives spanning across India.
