The Centre for Environmental Research & Education (CERE) was founded in 2002 by Dr. (Ms.) Rashneh N. Pardiwala, an ecologist hailing from the Universi Read morety of Edinburgh, and Mrs. Kitayun Rustom, a specialist in environmental education. CERE has achieved remarkable success in diverse projects across urban and rural India, collaborating closely with various government departments, educational institutions, multinational corporations, and civil society organizations. Programs

  • Urban Afforestation Project

    District

CERE's Urban Afforestation Project (UAP) is dedicated to enhancing the greenery in Indian cities while aiding companies, organizations, and individuals in diminishing their carbon footprint. Within this initiative, CERE conducts precise calculations of the carbon stored at each planting location. Their scientific approach to carbon sequestration assessments factors in variables such as species type, sapling age, and expected growth rates. These assessments yield sequestration values projected over 5, 10, or 15 years. CERE extends carbon sequestration assessments for both sponsored and private plantation endeavours.

  • Switch on Solar

India enjoys a bountiful supply of solar radiation, with most regions receiving this abundant energy source for 250 to 300 days annually, equating to a staggering potential of 6,000 million GWh of energy per year. The project aims to harness this potential by introducing solar technologies into schools throughout India, thereby bridging the energy gap. In addition to implementing solar solutions, this endeavour will focus on educating students about energy conservation and climate change mitigation.
Initially known as the 'Schools on Solar' project, it has since evolved, encompassing hospitals, and was rebranded as 'Switch on Solar' during the COVID-19 pandemic. This holistic initiative not only facilitates the installation of solar infrastructure but also assists schools in developing financial plans to reinvest some of their energy savings into energy-efficient devices, such as LED lighting systems.

  • Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is a well-established, straightforward, cost-effective, and sustainable method involving the collection of rainwater from rooftops and terraces during the monsoon season. This harvested rainwater is either stored in tanks or directed into the ground to replenish the water table, serving as a reliable source for household water needs.
The overarching objective of this initiative is to introduce, advocate for, and facilitate the installation of rainwater harvesting systems, thereby enhancing the quality of life and the urban environment in cities. CERE employs various techniques for rainwater harvesting, including the creation of percolation pits, contour trenches, bunds, open wells, and the enhancement of existing water bodies.

  • Biodiversity and educational gardens

To enhance biodiversity, CERE has undertaken the establishment of numerous biodiversity gardens in and around Mumbai. These gardens exclusively feature native plant species, creating vital habitats for insects, birds, and other wildlife reliant on these plants for sustenance and shelter. This habitat creation serves as a catalyst for biodiversity growth. However, the primary objective of these gardens is to offer children the opportunity to connect with nature, transforming these green spaces into interactive living textbooks. Through such educational encounters, children can develop into passionate advocates for nature conservation.
Native plants play a distinctive role in revitalizing local biodiversity. They have evolved over countless years within specific regions, possessing unique attributes that enable them to adapt to their environment. In turn, these plants support local populations of insects, birds, and animals that rely on them for sustenance and shelter.

  • Carbon Map and Cap

    District

CERE's program, Carbon Map & Cap™, is meticulously designed to offer the necessary guidance for identifying strategic environmental opportunities and establishing a clear link between environmental performance and business value. By assessing their environmental impact, with a particular focus on their greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory and response to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), CERE has empowered its clients to embark on a path toward responsible and sustainable development.
The assessment and mitigation of carbon footprints not only enable companies to enhance their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and address climate change risks but also result in improved brand image and heightened investor confidence.
