JOINT WOMEN'S PROGRAMME

The Joint Women’s Programme (JWP) is a movement for the empowerment of women, children and the community. JWP’s aim is for freedom from all forms of v Read moreiolence and the creation of a new society characterized by an equal partnership between women and men in the home and society.   In the year 1979, it began as a forum for women for their identity as citizens and persons with equal rights. It conducted several research studies on issues such as the Devadasi System, Women & Rape, Domestic Violence, Status of Single Women, Women workers, Women in Jails, The Dowry System, Immoral Traffic Prevention Act, Portrayal of Women image in the Media, and several others. The purpose of these studies was to bring about amendments in the existing laws and seeking new laws. In 2004 it was registered as a Society, under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in New Delhi. This enabled JWP to start grass root programmes for empowerment and development and use the researched information as the base.  In the year 2007, JWP started working in   and around the slums, in Nithari Village, Noida, Uttar Pradesh, after the murder of several children whose skeletons were found in the drains of this area. This area consists very poor communities where children, and adolescents are to be found roaming the streets and by lanes. JWP initiated a programme to provide protection to the children, a safe place where they could both learn and play.  “MERA SAHARA” an Education, Skill formation and Protection Centre  was started here with small donations from friends and relatives and local support.  JWP seeks to mobilize women and men against socio-economic and cultural disparities in society, and work towards development and empowerment. It brings together Government functionaries, Law enforcement agencies, and grassroots organizations on issues affecting the poor and the underprivileged groups. Currently, JWP has a presence in both urban and rural areas actively addressing issues of violence and discrimination against women and children, with emphasis on research, awareness-raising, and development, for law and policy change, gender sensitization, health education, non-formal education of children, adult education, and other grassroots activity for women and the community. Our Skill training programme is created for adolescents and women in computer use, tailoring and designing, weaving, cooking, and making basic agricultural farm tools for economic empowerment.   Special emphasis is given to environment and the protection of biodiversity and to this end, JWP has designed several programmes on waste management, waste minimization, cleanliness and hygiene, plantation, preservation of traditional seeds.
