Association for Social Solidarity and Empowerment Training Trust (ASSET) is a secular, non-political, non-communal, non-profit organization committe Read mored to the Socioeconomic, educational and cultural development of marginalised rural people. ASSET was registered on 27.07.2011 as a Non-Governmental Organization under the Indian Trust Act of 1981. Since its inception, ASSET is illumining the lives of many underprivileged people living in and around 7 districts in Tamil Nadu India. It has 3 members Executive Board of which 2 are women. Mission  “Engendering a new social order through our interventions and development programs, which would instigate every individual, especially women and children, to live their life exuberantly to its fullest.” Women Empowerment  Dalit women empowerment program: Women's participation and ensuring equity and equality shall be possible only through group dynamism and cohesive pursuit. In the Indian context, women play a major role in family maintenance and management and therefore empowering them in socio-economic and political sectors is pivotal for civil societies. ASSET organizes women at the grassroots by internalizing the activism process individually and brings them under the SHG and Federation structures for enabled governance structures. Women are under a series of threats like unwanted, unloved and unloved in childhood days, child rights violations, drudgery, sexual abuse in adolescent and adult stages, discrimination and more vulnerability to pandemic disease conditions, feticide, slavery and debt bonded. ASSET categorically organizes adolescent and adult women who are disadvantaged and under trafficking, slavery, sex work, and discrimination. ASSET has so far registered 16 WSHGs in the working blocks of 4 blocks Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty in Madurai District and mobilized credit access of Rs. 10 lakh, and the members have a total volume of Rs.10 lakh savings on internal lending and have a repayment percentage of above 98. Skill Training Programs for Dalit women ASSET to keep the two-sided angle of social and economic development provides training on Jute, Tailoring and Embroidery, Readymade Garments, piggery and computer education for Dalit, abandoned and destitute women and adolescent girls who are otherwise disadvantaged and never under the purview attention of service providers and human right activists. Recently have strategized in working towards employability in the Integrated Textile Park recognized by the government through “Textile Tailoring and garments making” training and successfully recruited 79 disadvantaged. So far ASSET has made meaningful changes in the sustainable income generation of more than 400 disadvantaged. 67 women belonging to the human excrement manual scavenging community were given opportunities for piggery farming and promoted a new concept of pass-on-the-pigs to the new beneficiaries under the supervision and facilitation of the Federation. ASSET has promoted a decentralized community-owned Training cum Production and Marketing Textile Garments Unit in 4 blocks Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty in Madurai District and federated them on collective ownership and the program has reached sustainability.  Education Program : Dalit children education empowerment and mother’s skill development  The prime objective of the program is to promote awareness of basic education rights of children in schooling and prevention of dropouts in the 4 blocks Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty in Madurai District. The geographical focus is on the 50 villages at 10 cluster levels. Through the program, the mothers of vulnerable children also receive support on meaningful skill development through tailoring and embroidery. Children were provided academic coaching through 10-child learning centres. Easy learning to slow learning child methodology is adapted and their knowledge levels, learning skills and excellence have been improved substantially. The center's function is to bring more responsible future citizens from unmet and discriminated communities. Awareness generation is being provided with a celebration of special days to sensitize the communities at the wider levels. Each year 300 children receive educational materials support, 250 children on academic coaching, 100 young mother in vocational training and 500 members receives healthcare assistance through organized health camps. 120 children were provided life skill accomplishment in two-wheeler mechanisms, computer application, and tailoring.  Emancipation of Child Labor:    Children in labour, children on the streets, and children in trafficking and dropout children are identified and provided rescue, and rehabilitation services. ASSET has made a milestone in reaching 653 of such children so far in the operation in the focus 4 blocks Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty in Madurai District Tamil Nadu India. The growing needs of the neglected and unmet children in bridge-up courses are provided and enabled life skill learning, rehabilitation and mainstreaming in formal education systems.   Mainstreaming the Drop-out Children:   This program is implemented for mainstreaming dropout children. A committee on children mainstreaming and academic excellence has been formed. Orientation workshops and back-to-school campaigns are being conducted through this program. 10 children learning centres have been established. Children of age group 8 to 18 are benefitting from this program. Classes are tailored concerning the age of the beneficiary children. A nutrition mix has been provided to all the children. Special events and mass get together are being conducted for the children.  Health Program : Development of People with Disability (PWD): The disabled persons were categorically organized as special SHG groups and provided Community Based Rehabilitation services. The essential services of prevention of discrimination, prevention of disability, economic empowerment, political empowerment, and facilitating attaining of government disabled schemes and benefits. 34 disabled adults are empowered with self-management and economic opportunities through training and credit access and management from local banking institutions. 21 disabled adults and adolescents were supported with mobility bicycles and 213 children were supported with uniforms, books, and school bags.  Safe Water Facility: The aim is to propagate the best methods of safe water, and water scarcity management facilities provided through demonstration and dissemination. The people of villages in 4 blocks Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty in Madurai District have suffered a lot of deprived safe water facilities. These families used to spend 2 to 4 hours per day fetching water. These family women had to walk more than 2 kilometres every day to reach the nearest water point which is located in the area where higher community people are living. Still, the practice of untouchability exists in these villages. These dalit women have to wait until the higher caste women finish fetching the water. As a result of these practices, the dalit women spent a considerable amount of time every day. Many times, the children of these families unable to go schools and women unable to go to their work on time, as they needed to stand in the queue to collect water. ASSET has facilitated 10 safe water facilities by sinking 10 borewells, installing 10 water tanks and connecting the water tanks to 50 families of 10 villages through GI pipe and tap facilities. Presently the children are going to school regularly and the women are going to their work timely. As these women and girl children save a considerable amount of time, they are using those time productively. The children are studying well by utilising those time and the women have engaged themselves in additional business activities.  Reproductive child health education and training: ASSET in consideration of sexual exploitation, trafficking and vulnerability to pandemic disease conditions conducts RCH education in the focused 4 blocks (Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty) of Madurai District. The program minimizes the incidences of mother and child mortality rates and malnourished and under-nourished conditions. RCH education is given in the participation of Anganwadi workers and block development coordinators of ICDCs and PRIs. It also develops community-level health workers and enables timely response to emergencies and refers to Medical practitioners for follow-ups.  Scaling up of Campaigns for Prevention of Hansen’s Disease (Leprosy): The aim of this program is the prevention of Hansen’s disease (leprosy) through spreading the word through awareness cycle rallies, poster campaigns, wall writings, inter-face meetings with government health staffs, video screening in villages and schools, organizing screening camps, vaccination camp, media campaign and distribution of IEC materials. This program has been implemented in the 4 schools and 4 colleges of Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty blocks of the Madurai district.  Sanitation Facilities: The aim is to propagate the best methods of hygienic sanitation facilities provided through demonstration and dissemination. Low-cost toilet facilities have been constructed with the support of like-minded Individual Donors. 7-schools and 200 families receive the facilities and practices.  Total Rural Sanitation Campaign: In considering the open defecation, the water-borne disease spreads and water quality management prime needs to construct 1200 Low-Cost individual Toilets for the households of Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty Blocks with ASSET and people’s contribution of free labour. World AIDS DAY Observance and Peer HIV/AIDS Education: ASSET organizes World AIDS Day every December 1st through Street Theatre programs and sensitization meetings. Students, Youth, Truck drivers, and Commercial Sex Workers participate in the campaigns and support the prevention and care and support services. It provides the key risk groups with the required knowledge about the prevention, care and support, counselling, testing, ART adherence and positive living services of government and HIV/AIDS service providers available within their proximity. Peer leaders have been developed among the infected, affected and unaffected communities and formed peer pressure in the safe living, prevention and treatment services.  Environment : Environment awareness program: ASSET regularly conducts National Environment Awareness Campaign for the last six years in partnership with the Government of India. Through this campaign, we sensitize students, teachers, SHG members, and small and marginal farmers and create awareness on the conservation and management of natural resources, liquid and solid waste management, rainwater harvesting systems, organic farming and sustainable agricultural practices.  Afforestation program:  ASSET has conducted environment exploitation implications studies in the Sirumalai forest area and the Conservation and restoration of the degraded estuarine ecosystem of the Pitchavaram Mangrove Forest of Tamil Nadu, India. We have restored 20 ha of Mangrove forest area with nursery raised and native collection and KEM potting of 40,000 saplings and provided opportunities for sustainable livelihood through crab fattening and formed an exclusive Conservation and Monitoring Committee. Community-Based Coastal Eco-Development Programme and Livelihood after Tsunami: ASSET provides awareness of the coastal communities on the need for Mangrove conservation and afforestation and its contribution to biodiversity conservation and coastal shield during Tsunami. 47-SHGs were provided with nursery raising and plantation techniques of Rhizophora and Avicenia. In the participatory workshop have grown 20000 seedlings and helped in the afforestation and income generation of the coastal natives. Each year communities were given awareness on conserving native tree species and restoring degraded areas and subsequently planted selective 500 tree species with the help of the Lions Club.  Sustainable Agriculture Training to the Farmers: This unique program minimizes and nullifies the usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides among the farmers and provides capacity building on traditional organic farming and watershed and water body management. Legal Awareness Program : Human Rights Programs: ASSET periodically conducts capacity building and cadre building training workshops on Human rights Education, Dalit Rights, Tribal and Unorganized workforce rights and entitlement Women Rights, and Child rights. ASSET Legal Wing provides legal aid and education to the affected women and also enables them to be Activists of social change.  Covid 19 outreach : Provision of Dry Rations, Medicines and Health and Hygiene Products: Dry rations, biscuits, medicines, masks etc., of value Rs. 600 have been provided to 150 vulnerable beneficiaries of Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty block who suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Working areas : ASSET is working in Madurai, Dindigul, Theni & Cuddalore districts of Tamilnadu state in India- with Vadipatti as its base. There are four blocks (4 blocks Thiruparankundram Sedapatti Thirumangalam and Vadipatty) in the Madurai district which receive the maximum of our support and interventions. In addition to this, we covered, Palani Hills of Dindigul district for environment programmes, In Cuddalore district, ASSET has women empowerment programmes for fisherwomen and also mangrove restoration programs.
