Access to primary education is a basic right of every child. Yet globally, more than 58 million children of primary school age are not able to attend Read more school. The reasons for this vary remoteness, poverty, conflict, natural disasters, government instability and different forms of exclusion. Several million of these out-of-school children are in India, despite it being a country that provides free and compulsory education. The problem is most evident in a handful of states, such as Bihar. Bihar is home to 120 million residents, half of whom are aged under 25. Of all Indian states, it ranks lowest on the Human Development Index. 11% of primary school-aged children in Bihar have never attended school, and 49% are at least two years behind their age standard. The state also struggles with teacher absenteeism. Schoolgoers is an NGO enhancing access to education in rural Bihar, India. In December 2022, we launched Ghonghariya Primary School, in southern Bihar. The school consists of two classrooms and bathrooms, with further classrooms planned for the future. In line with feedback from residents, this NGO school will offer more support than the mainstream education system, and deliver classes in English. The build was completed in December 2022, with classes to commence with the new school year in April 2023.
