Family Development Services - Building Blocks, an organization dedicated to aiding slum children throughout India, focuses on offering them a comprehe Read morensive education comparable to that of private schools. Through its kindergarten program, it equips underprivileged children, as young as three years, with essential knowledge of the English language, arithmetic, science, and life skills. This initiative, made possible by generous sponsors, addresses the economic barriers preventing these children from accessing early learning opportunities, ensuring they receive education free of charge. The organization's centers serve as sanctuaries for children accustomed to the hardships of slum life, lacking basic amenities like clean water and electricity. Here, they not only receive an education, but also learn fundamental hygiene practices, such as handwashing, and engage in activities like reading colorful illustrated books and celebrating birthdays with peers. For many, attending Building Blocks represents their first exposure to a nurturing environment where they can learn, play, and grow, marking a significant departure from the challenges they face daily.

Issue

These children have no access to an English Medium Education. In addition, as their parents are daily wage laborers who leave early in the morning, many do not have access to proper meals. By coming to BB, it ensures the children have at least 2 nutritious meals a day. As the parents themselves are illiterate, their priorities are very different and mainly consists of managing their daily survival. Sad to say, educating their children, is one of the last things on their mind.

Action

Currently in our 11 Building Blocks centers, we educate 802 three- to six-year-olds. Currently we have 460 school students under the Project Plus 10 vertical, who are in classes ranging from the 1st to 10th standards. Currently we have 74 students under the Bloom (for computer literacy) vertical. A total of 1336 students are currently benefiting from our programs. We also give 1604 nutritious meals every day to children aged between 3 to 6 years old.

Impact

Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty for these families. All of the kids coming to our Building Blocks centers are pretty much 1st generation learners. Besides education, cleanliness and personal hygiene is a big part of what we teach the children at the same time. Needless to say, as most of them do not have access to running water, this is a big step in helping them to see how different things can be in their lives. Another area where there is a noticeable impact, is in attacking malnutrition. The children coming to our Building Blocks centers, get two nutritious meals each day. Our program also impacts the parents of our Building Blocks students as they now see how education can impact their children’s lives and futures. Even though they still might not have the wherewithal to give their children a higher education, through our Project Plus Ten program, this is made possible. Total students impacted by BB = 10492 Total students impacted by PPT = 2641 Total students impacted by Bloom = 283

Programs

  • Project +10

Project +10 aims to support underprivileged children who have completed a three-year kindergarten program by providing them with opportunities to continue their education from Grade 1 to Grade 10. This initiative addresses the financial limitations of families unable to afford English medium schools, advocating for sponsors to assist in funding these students' educational journey. It is a chance to not only bring joy but also to create a significant, enduring impact on their future.

  • Bloom Programme

The Bloom Program by Family Development Services - Building Blocks aims to address the digital divide affecting youth and women in urban-poor communities, who lack access to basic computer skills training. With a landscape marked by limited digital access, widening socioeconomic gaps, and barriers to education and employment for those without digital skills, the program focuses on empowering its participants for a brighter future. Through comprehensive digital inclusion initiatives, including IT access, mentorship, skill development in software applications and coding languages, and holistic support, Bloom strives to break the cycle of poverty and vulnerability. As a result, over half of the program's graduates have seen a significant increase in their earning potential, demonstrating the transformative impact of computer literacy on their lives.

  • Building Blocks

Under our Building Blocks vertical, which was what we began with in 2005, over the years we have grown from one classroom in a garage to a total of 11 centers spread over 3 states in South India. We have one center in Goa, another in Hyderabad, one in Coorg and all of the remaining in Bangalore.
Under this we focus on aiding slum children, offering them a comprehensive education comparable to that of private English Medium schools.
We also give the students two nutritious meals each day, which is a tremendous aid, as their parents are very poor daily wage laborers and sometimes do not have any income.
