About

  • Since

    2017

The Gyankunj initiative, founded in 2017, stemmed from the realization that high dropout rates among slum children were primarily due to a dearth of q Read moreuality educators rather than a lack of interest. With a mission to reduce dropout rates and provide comprehensive education to underprivileged children, Gyankunj offers primary education, digital literacy, sewing classes, and social awareness programs. Operating initially in the JJ Colony of Bawana, a crime-prone area in Delhi, Gyankunj aims to engage children in constructive activities to steer them away from negative influences. The founders believe that education fosters independent thinking and nurtures individuals to become assets to their communities. Gyankunj's vision is to empower every student with knowledge and motivation, positively impacting society by facilitating education and vocational training for marginalized communities. The mission is to provide unwavering support to ensure every student completes primary and secondary education successfully. Bawana was chosen as the inaugural location due to its status as one of Delhi's lesser developed areas, characterized by a 71% literacy rate and high dropout rates. Within this context, Gyankunj recognizes prevalent societal norms that discourage girls from pursuing education, often due to economic pressures and traditional gender roles. Parents in the area often lack faith in the employability of their children after completing formal education, leading to a preference for immediate financial contributions over schooling. Additionally, cultural biases and safety concerns further impede girls' access to education. Gyankunj's approach involves providing a support system that addresses these concerns, fostering trust among parents and children alike. By focusing on safety for girls and employability for boys, Gyankunj endeavors to mitigate dropout rates and promote education as a pathway to a brighter future for all children in the community.
