Issue
Education issue - Vidyamythri trust is located in Tavargera town of Kushtagi taluk of Koppal district in north Karnataka. This is one of the most backward region in terms of education and has extremely low rate of literacy. The region is still regressive with socially uncanny practices like untouchability and devadasi system. Children of these communities often cannot access education without discrimination. Persistent relegation of these children often lead to large numbers of dropping outs in schools, especially girls. The mode of schooling in the rural areas of Kushtagi are government schools. Often times these schools lack enough teachers some of them have single teacher schools . Children with disability - Kushtagi taluk in Koppal district, Karnataka, faces multiple vulnerabilities, particularly for people with disabilities. These challenges need to be addressed to design an effective disability project. Some key vulnerabilities include: • Kushtagi taluk in Karnataka is highly vulnerable to drought due to its location in the North Interior Karnataka region, which is considered highly drought-prone. The taluk has been identified as very highly vulnerable in drought risk assessments. This vulnerability is reflected in the high number of taluks in the region classified as highly and very highly vulnerable. • Lack of early diagnosis: Children may not receive timely identification of their disabilities due to poor access to healthcare services and professionals. • The communities are oppressed and are devoid of any self-esteem. And if a child with disability is born in these conditions it is almost fatal for the child. Lack of awareness and facilities add to their woes. Some government machinery has put in some programs but they have not moved beyond identification. They intervention ends with referrals to district hospital, which is almost 100 km. away. Hence we recognise a need for a comprehensive program for children with disabilities in this region. • The communities here are very traditional and have practises like cousin marriages. This region also heads the list of most children with malnutrition born every year. Malnutrition if not addressed at the right time leads to disability. Consanguineous marriages and high instances of malnutrition makes the community one of the most vulnerable. • The Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram team has identified and registered them under Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram scheme but none of them got any intervention plan or facility. But they visit the family once every three months. The family was asked to come to district rehabilitation centre only 15% of the 185 visited district hospitals once or may be twice. But children are not given any needed intervention. • Unsafe environments: Overcrowded and unhygienic living conditions pose higher risks of illness, infections, and injuries for children requiring special care. • The people of these villages are labourers and farmers. They leave the house in the morning and return in the evening. The intervention hence has to be home based in the beginning. Parents do want their children to improve but due to lack of time, resources and awareness on intervention they neglect their children leading to disability in most of the cases. They also lose hope if they did not see any change in the condition with whatever little they would have tried • Parental burden: Caregivers may face immense stress, unable to balance work with the needs of the child.
Action
Educational Support Supplementary teaching for government school children in rural villages. Special focus on foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) for grades 1–5. Learning enhancement programs for middle and high school students. Children with disability - Early intervention & Inclusive education During our interactions with community and teacher, we encountered a need that was bouncing in front of us repeatedly. That is we saw children with disability are most neglected, in the taluk of Kushtagi. The parents and other community members urged us to include children with disabilities in our program. By default, we observed that the methods we follow are also beneficial to children with disabilities. This initiative motivated us to peek in to the disability facts of Kushtagi. From the secondary data, we came to know that there are around 700 children with disabilities in the Kushtagi Block we work in. and around 350 children with delay in development identified. Environment project - The Herbal Garden Plantation initiative aims to establish mini herbal gardens in government school campuses to promote eco-awareness, hands-on learning, and traditional knowledge of medicinal plants among children and communities. This program brings together environmental education, health awareness, and sustainability in a simple, local, and impactful way. Increased awareness of natural health practices among children. 01) Improvement in school environment and student engagement. 02) Strengthening of environmental and practical education. 03) Revival of local ecological and medicinal knowledge. Ownership and pride in school spaces among students The model is low-cost, community-driven, and can be easily replicated across rural schools with minimal support. Local Panchayats, forest departments, or AYUSH mission programs can be potential partners.

3. Children are provided with necessary aids and appliances for rehabilitation.
4. Ongoing early stimulation and therapy services are provided to children at the centre and in the community.
5. 350 children with disabilities are enrolled in social security benefits, including Aadhar card, Unique Disability ID, Pension. -
Children with disability - Inclusive Education
The state no doubt admits children with disabilities in schools. But they do not get the required support in schools as far as learning is concerned. There are only 3 special teachers allotted for 700. It is highly impossible for these two teachers to educate all of them and support regular teachers. Some of the schools are single teacher schools which makes learning for children with disabilities a farfetched dream and teaching them is herculean task for teachers.
Early intervention
The state Chid development department does put in efforts to identify children through RBSK . But the intervention does not take place at taluk level parents have to travel 120 kms to avail rehabilitation facilities provided by district rehabilitation centre.
These factors have triggered a thought in the trustees and senior members of Vidyamythri trust to delve in to this area
One of our trustees Mrs Usharani is an expert in the area of Disability. She has had 35 years of experience in the area.
