Angel Xpress Foundation (AXF),is a 12 A & 80G certified NGO. We are committed to empowering first-generation learners from underserved communities in Read moreMumbai. Our Free Learning Centres (FLCs) offer inclusive and holistic education that fosters literacy, social-emotional development, and life skills for children who lack the resources to succeed academically. By holding FLCs in accessible public spaces like parks, we break down barriers to education and create vibrant learning communities, driven by local resources and volunteerism. The FLC format enables volunteers to tutor, mentor and guide school-going children from economically marginalised communities for an hour and a half daily in public spaces like parks. AXF offers free resources and services for citizen groups who wish to adopt the FLC format to bring change in their own neighbourhood; which include standardised policies, curriculum material for children, teaching resources and training for volunteers, capacity and team-building workshops for leaders operating the program on-ground, volunteer training and meetings, events like annual day and graduation. AXF has a backend system for database management, impact tracking, and reporting for donors, as well as a website and social media presence that helps direct volunteers and donors to the nearest centre. Our data management system for capturing attendance and assessment records is through ZOHO As of Jan 2025, our FLCs are implemented across 31 locations/centres (https://angelxpress.org/centres-list/) through 1344 volunteers and have already transformed the lives of more than 5645 students and currently we have 3105 active students. The FLC program includes tutoring for basic English, Math & Life skills from grades 1 to 7, the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) includes high school curriculum for students in grades 8 to 12 and for our alumni students who are in degree and diploma courses we include career awareness and a range of soft skills sessions. We also have spoken english program for grade 5 and above.Besides continued operation of centres that are running and constant upgrades of the program format, we aim to scale up the number of children receiving this intervention to 5000 active students by adding new locations and volunteers over the next 3 years. This will enable volunteering to become a lifestyle choice for urban society and begin a social movement that can potentially encompass millions. Issue

Issue 1: Inadequate Curriculum Completion in the Schools which our students attend -The schools often promote students to higher grades with only 35% of the curriculum completed, which leads to weak foundational knowledge. Issue 2: Poor Quality of Primary Education in Schools which our students attend- The quality of primary education in these schools is significantly impacted due to teacher shortages, with 40% of the total number of sanctioned positions unfilled. This results in fewer teachers for Math, English, and Science subjects, leading to a high student-teacher ratio of 41:1 and a lack of quality teaching. Issue 3: High Dropout Rates in Undergraduate Colleges Due to Lack of English Comprehension and Speaking Skills-Many students drop out of undergraduate colleges (which are predominantly English medium) due to a lack of English comprehension and speaking skills.

Action

AXF prioritizes clarifying and strengthening concepts before advancing students. We have developed our own curriculum focused on efficient communication, critical and logical thinking, and empathetic life skills. We begin with baseline tests to assess each student's capabilities and place them at an appropriate level. Monthly tests track their progress, and at the end of the year, an endline exam determines promotion to the next level. This standardized practice is followed throughout our organization. At Angel Xpress, we maintain a low student-to-teacher ratio of 5:1 to ensure personalized attention and quality education. This approach allows for better teaching and fosters emotional and social bonds with the children. Besides working on foundational knowledge of the English language in lower grades, AXF has introduced Spoken English and Life Skills programs to combat the issue of students dropping out of college due to inability to fit in and cope with the curriculum. Spoken English helps students become fluent in English, while Life Skills helps children become more confident and develop a higher emotional quotient (EQ). As a result, students are now able to stay in college and move towards gainful employment and improved quality of life. By providing a daily healthy snack to address nutrition, organising giveaways of essentials like toiletries, stationery and other useful items like bags, shoes, tiffin boxes, rainwear etc, cultivating donors and organising toy redistribution drives to help address deprivation. We also organise regular fun and educational outings to movies, plays, malls, and museums and create interaction opportunities with children from affluent schools and colleges through third party tie-ups to help increase exposure and contribute towards a happier childhood experience.

Impact

AXF’s Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) processes are designed to track student progress and ensure that our programs deliver measurable results. We conduct baseline, monthly, and endline assessments in English and Math, aligned with CERF and NCERT standards. Additionally, we regularly measure the impact of our HSC, SSC, and Life Skills programs through surveys, feedback, and reflection. To ensure transparency, we compile quarterly and annual reports detailing our activities, impact, and budget utilisation. Impact 2023-24 AXF volunteers completed over 36000 teaching hours across various programs and 720 volunteers have completed more than 20 hours by January 2025 The AXF Core program has an average attendance of 70% and more, while the SSC and HSC programs have over 65% attendance. Life Skills program has 82% attendance English is assessed both in a written and oral format. Skills like grammar, reading comprehension, vocabulary and writing are assessed in the written summative assessment. Skills like reading fluency and speaking skills are assessed through oral diagnostic assessment. Mathematics is assessed completely in written summative format. The summative assessments take place twice a year: Baseline and Endline. During the baseline assessment, we diagnose the level of a student to assign them an appropriate level. We have 5 monthly tests .In the monthly assessment, we assess the student’s progress with the curriculum covered between the baseline and monthly assessments. In the endline assessments, we assess the student’s progress with the entire year’s curriculum. In Maths, the average baseline score of 59.7% increased to 76% over time. Similarly, in English, the average baseline score of 53.4% improved to 70.5% at the endline assessment OUR SUCCESS STORIES Roushan Jha : Scored 85% in HSC, qualified in JEE Mains and currently in 3rd year at D J Sanghavi College of Engineering for Computer Science Gopal Jha : Scored 79% in HSC and joined Don Bosco Institute of Technology for B.Tech. in Electronics.
