The Shadows to Stars Project focuses on establishing an English learning ecosystem for slum children using diverse tools like sports, music, art, cinema, and the internet. Launched in August 2017 in the East Bengaluru slum of Nellorepuram, the initiative began with a non-formal education module using English as the medium of instruction. With a deep-rooted presence in the local community, Maarga formally adopted the project in August 2019. The future vision includes providing access to regular, professionally-run sessions in various fields, fostering digital literacy, English proficiency, and a broader understanding of societal issues.

Maarga's innovative programme, in contrast to traditional rote-learning methods, focuses on play and fun for an immersive learning experience. Play & Learn centres operate for first-generation learners in Government schools, targeting children from 1st to 4th standard. Open six days a week for two hours after school, these centres employ community-selected mentors trained for play & learning activities. The curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum Framework 2005, emphasizing critical thinking, creativity, and confidence in language and mathematics. Currently, two centres engage 50 children, fostering vocabulary, mathematical concepts, and experiential learning.
