Inspired by the vision of Venerable Bishop Thomas Kurialachery (BTK), the school is dedicated to providing education and support for mentally challenged individuals. The Congregation of the Sisters of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (SABS), a pontifical order, was founded by Venerable Mar Thomas Kurialacherry in 1908 at Champakulam, Kerala, India, with Co-foundress Mother Mary Francisea de Chantal. Their mission extends to various fields, including education, parish ministry, faith apostolate, healing ministry, and more. The congregation operates schools, colleges, nursing schools, hospitals, nature cure centres, and retreat centres. The sisters engage in mission work both in India and abroad, focusing on uplifting the poor, especially women and children. In Kanyakumari District, the congregation runs two special schools for mentally challenged children: Santhi Nilayam school at Paruthivilai and Jothi Nilayam school at Pallapalam. Santhi Nilayam school began with three children in a small hut and has since grown to train 185 students (133 boys and 52 girls). The students receive various types of training, including early intervention, special education, vocational training, and community-based rehabilitation. The organization employs a dedicated staff comprising 20 special educators, 4 therapists, 3 social workers, and 8 non-teaching staff. These highly qualified professionals regularly update their skills to align with the latest advances in intervention and rehabilitation techniques for special children. The school is well-equipped with infrastructure to cater to the needs of the mentally retarded children, with a focus on providing individual attention and a specially designed curriculum tailored to each child's unique needs. Dedicated staff members have been appointed to cater to the unique requirements of these children. The school currently accommodates 40 children with autism who undergo assessment by psychiatrists using the Indian Scale for Assessment of Autism. A tailored programme is devised to provide ongoing training, including special education, sensory integration, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, music therapy, play therapy, hydrotherapy, sand therapy, and behaviour modification therapy.

  • Early Intervention and Stimulation Centre (EIC)

    The Early Intervention and Stimulation Centre caters to children aged 0 to 6 years facing delayed milestone challenges. Therapeutic interventions and stimulation are provided to utilize their crucial developmental period. Over 50 parents from across Kanyakumari district bring their children here regularly for training and therapies. Parents receive counselling and are trained to educate their children, fostering a collaborative effort to maximize development. The goal is to prepare the child for a life closer to normalcy, enabling their integration into mainstream education and training under the regular state board.

  • Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR)

    The CBR programmes extends to eight villages in and around Kanyakumari district. Family-Based Rehabilitation (FBR) is an integral part of the services. Additionally, the school operates a CBR centre in Puthalam, a rural coastal village lacking proper transportation options. Due to the students' inability to commute independently, rehabilitation training is provided to mentally challenged children directly within their community. This initiative also includes raising awareness within the community about mental health challenges and the available rehabilitation support.
