It is a leading member of the largest independent humanitarian organization in the world, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The Mission of the Indian Red Cross is to inspire, encourage and initiate at all times all forms of humanitarian activities so that human suffering can be minimised and even prevented, and thus contribute to creating a more congenial, peaceful environment.

The Tamil Nadu Branch was formed on November 27, 1920. It has grown to have 32 district branches and 92 sub-district branches across the state over the past century.
