Don Bosco's efforts for street children in Trivandrum commenced in May 1991, starting as a night shelter in rented facilities at Bishop Pereira Hall, Read moreShankumugham, and Chalai Market. On December 9th, 1991, 'The Trivandrum Don Bosco Veedu Society' was registered (Serial No. 963/91). Key areas of intervention included home placement, legal support, food, clothing, medicine, temporary shelter, and education. In 1994, land and a building were acquired at Manacaud, and the shelter home relocated, named 'Don Bosco Veedu.' Activities expanded to include the welfare of slum dwellers at Karimadom Colony, encompassing tuition centers, awareness programs, women empowerment, micro-financial schemes, and small-scale income-generating projects. Don Bosco also actively addressed social issues such as alcoholism and drug abuse, fostering a participatory model of development that empowered local leadership. In 1999, land was purchased near Thampanoor railway station for a more accessible shelter home. 'Don Bosco Nivas' was inaugurated on January 31st, 2002.
