About

Established in 1990 on the occasion of Baba Saheb Ambedkar Centenary, the Samithi organized a Swabhimana jatha with Ambedkar Jyothi to tour Karnataka Read more for one whole year. The Jatha left Bangalore after a grand celebration at the Kanteerava Stadium on 14th April 1990 and touching nearly 3000 villages and towns and covering about 17000 Kms it returned to Bangalore on 13.4.1991, to a two-day celebration. It had fulfilled its objective of propagating the life and mission of Ambedkar and his vision for a free India, where equality and justice prevailed. It had also preached against social evils like untouchability, consumption of liquor, superstition etc. People irrespective of caste and creed responded to the celebrations and would receive the Jatha at the district border and after its sojourn in the district is over, ceremonially hand it over to the leaders of the next district. It raised the awareness of people about Baba Saheb and his contribution to the people and the country. It had also the effect of broadening the vision of the people and welding them together. Even after the completion of the programme, the committee continued. It organized seminars, workshops and cultural programs to develop awareness among the people. In appreciation of the Centenary celebrations and other constructive activities the committee had been doing, the Government sanctioned thirty acres of land to the Samithi. The Samithi converted itself into a Trust and took possession of the land. The place is called Spoorthidhama-Ambedkar Memorial Campus.
