  • Climate goals and global engagement

Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 and the resulting economic downturn, India continues to make substantial strides in addressing climate change. During COP26 in Glasgow, India unveiled more ambitious climate objectives compared to its Paris Agreement commitments. These new targets aim to achieve 50% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030 and decrease the carbon intensity of its economy to below 45% within the same timeframe. Additionally, India has pledged to attain economy-wide net zero emissions by 2070. While India has historically contributed relatively less to the global climate crisis, its significance as one of the world's largest economies makes its involvement crucial in resolving this issue.

  • Clean transport

India, ranking as the fourth-largest renewables market and the fifth-largest automobile producer globally, stands as the world's third-largest oil importer. Transitioning to electric vehicles powered by renewable energy presents a substantial opportunity for the nation. This shift could lead to significant energy import savings, notably enhance air quality in Indian cities, and contribute to combating the climate crisis already affecting millions of Indians. Given the deadly pollution levels, rapid urbanization, and the growing occurrence of climate-related disasters, communities in India are becoming increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts. NRDC India is prioritizing city-centred initiatives aligned with national policies to address air pollution concerns by promoting the adoption of electric mobility.

  • Climate resilience and health

The heightened levels of deadly pollution, swift urbanization, and the escalating frequency of climate-related disasters are rendering communities in India more susceptible to the adverse effects of climate change. NRDC India is directing its efforts toward city-oriented initiatives aligned with national policies aimed at curtailing air pollution and fostering climate resilience, particularly in combating extreme heat.

  • Cooling and energy efficiency

With rising temperatures, increasing consumer power, and rapid urbanization, the demand for cooling is growing in Indian cities. To help meet these challenges, NRDC India is working to phase down HFCs, increase air conditioner efficiency, and promote cool roofs and green buildings for all.

  • Renewable energy growth and access

To achieve and exceed India’s renewable energy targets, stronger policies, creative finance mechanisms, and clean energy access are all needed. NRDC India is working with partners to advance clean energy policies and jobs, develop finance solutions and enhance village energy access – which in turn improves lives for poor communities and fights climate change.
