Issue

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) is a hidden epidemic in India. According to government data, over 53% of children report experiencing some form of sexual abuse — yet the majority of cases go unreported due to fear, shame, and lack of awareness. Most abuse is committed by someone the child knows — relatives, neighbors, even teachers — and often happens in spaces that should be safe. The impact is lifelong, affecting mental health, emotional well-being, education, and future relationships. Survivors frequently battle depression, anxiety, self-harm, and trust issues into adulthood. Despite the introduction of the POCSO Act, awareness about CSA and how to prevent or respond to it remains dangerously low among parents, teachers, and even children. Most children don’t know how to identify unsafe touch or seek help. There is an urgent need for: 1) Age-appropriate education for children 2) Training for adults on how to respond to disclosures 3) Safe spaces where survivors can share and heal 4) Strong community awareness to break the silence around CSA At Bachpan Save The Innocence, we are working to fill these gaps through sensitisation workshops, survivor support, and institutional partnerships. We believe that every child deserves a safe childhood, and the responsibility to ensure it belongs to all of us.

Action

The organization conducts sustainable training programs and workshops for children and adults across professions to prevent child sexual abuse and provide support to victims.

Impact

In a recent assessment across four schools (Grades 3-5, 500 children), we conducted a pre-and post-assessment over four months to evaluate knowledge retention. The findings were significant: 1) The percentage of children with a poor understanding of personal safety dropped from 77% to 44%. 2) Those with average understanding increased from 21% to 47%, while 9% reached good/excellent levels (from 0%). 3) Overall CSA awareness scores improved from 44% to 68%. Additionally, feedback from 1,857 students across 12 schools highlighted that: 1) 84% learned something new about personal safety. 2) 75% felt more confident in recognising unsafe situations. 3) 73% had their past concerns addressed during the sessions.

Vision & Mission

Their vision is to educate everyone on CSA prevention through sustainable programs and provide a platform for CSA victims through support groups and therapy sessions, with a focus on expanding to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

    District

Child sexual abuse (CSA) leaves a lasting impact on the psyche and self-perception. The trauma may result in denial and dissociation, hindering acceptance and recovery. Venting provides a secure space to express thoughts, emotions, and traumatic experiences. Speaking openly about haunting memories aids healing, rebuilding trust, and achieving mental liberation. Anonymously sharing CSA experiences is encouraged, ensuring safety and facilitating disclosure in cases of difficulty or mistrust. The platform allows individuals to share their stories, with the responsibility of presenting these narratives to the world.

  • Sensitization Programme

Promoting awareness of child rights and sex education at a personal level is crucial for safeguarding children and unique sensitization programmes have been crafted for various age groups. For instance, the "Safe Touch and Unsafe Touch" programme targets classes 3 to 5, addressing the vulnerability of this age group to abuse. Programs like "Adolescence" and "Consent" cater to classes 6 to 10, tackling issues related to emotional and physical changes during adolescence. "Digital Wellbeing" and "Cyber Safety" programmes address the challenges arising from digital engagement, and a legal workshop on the POCSO Act is designed for adults, specifically teachers and law students. These initiatives aim to bridge gaps in societal awareness and provide essential knowledge for preventing child sexual abuse.
