With 250 million students enrolled in 1.5 million schools, India boasts the largest school system in the world. But even with almost universal element Read moreary enrolment, learning is still difficult. Nearly 80% of third-graders in rural India struggle with basic reading and math comprehension. The cost of this problem is high; each year, illiteracy costs the Indian economy some $53 billion. Since 2012, STiR has been addressing these issues in India. We now operate in three states with our pals at the Centre for Intrinsic Motivation.

Building government ownership
All of the activities in our program are administered through government channels. This guarantees that we reach every child and aids in our sustainable scale-up efforts. A local government authority or school head oversees each teacher network. Other members of the system also mentor and assist these leaders. Data analysis opportunities are offered to all stakeholders through regular alignment meetings held at the local and state levels. They collaborate to create plans to enhance delivery and share their learning.
Every program is co-designed by us and our government partners. We develop an awareness of the needs in the community and adapt our actions to meet those requirements. We also make sure that their current priorities and policies are strongly aligned.
