Education
DescriptionUBS is addressing the challenge of poor-quality primary education in India through a Development Impact Bond (DIB). In India, many students are significantly behind their expected academic level, with less than half of Grade 5 students able to read at a Grade 2 level. Contributing factors include teacher shortages, lack of management training for school principals, and insufficient facilities like girls' toilets and drinking water. UBS's initiative focuses on outcomes, funded upfront by a philanthropic investor through the UBS Optimus Foundation. If successful, the programme aims to enhance literacy and numeracy over four years, using supplementary education, community mobilisation, innovative curriculum changes, and teacher training. Progress is assessed annually through evaluations.
