Action

AKAH India promotes risk-informed planning, safeguards key infrastructure, ensures access to basic services, and creates safe and climate-resilient habitats through community-led action combining participatory and data-driven approaches.

Impact

AKAH India has directly reached 1.5 million individuals through its various projects and field employees' participation, working primarily in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Telangana.

Vision & Mission

AKAH India's vision is to create habitats that allow communities to be resilient to disasters, adapt to climate change, and thrive. Its mission is to enable communities to be resilient through technical expertise in climate action, risk reduction and habitat improvement.

Programs

  • Coastal Climate Resilience and Biodiversity

AKAH works on creating ecosystem-based models for biodiversity preservation and coastal restoration. These initiatives aim to make communities more resilient to natural disasters and climate change. Through the implementation of community-led and data-driven adaption strategies, AKAH promotes inclusive policies and activities that are based on risk assessments. Its programs are in line with state and federal climate change action plans, guaranteeing a well-coordinated and efficient response to the current problems.

  • Water Security Management

AKAH is dedicated to using community-led solutions to guarantee water availability, accessibility, and dependability for everyone. These models address several topics about improving water quality, conserving water, replenishing groundwater, and distributing water fairly. To accomplish this, AKAH builds water harvesting infrastructure, enhances already existing water bodies, and supports water governance at the community level. By putting these policies into place, AKAH hopes to provide long-term solutions that enhance communities and encourage effective water resource management.

Milestones & Track Record

AKAH has conducted hazard, vulnerability and risk assessments for settlements covering nearly three million people, built safe water and sanitation systems for more than 600,000 people, and helped communities build 5,000 natural-hazard-resilient hospitals, schools and community centers.
