Since
1974
Group of determined mothers of children with intellectual disabilities, along with supportive friends, launched one of India’s earliest Parents Associ Read moreations. This pioneering effort aimed to foster acceptance, welfare, and rehabilitation for children with intellectual disabilities, thus igniting the Parents Movement. Initially, AWMH offered counseling to parents facing the challenging realities of raising a child with such needs, guiding them from acceptance to empowerment. Today, AWMH serves nearly 100 children monthly through its Early Intervention Centers, providing essential therapies for neuro-developmental delays. Its Sports and Coaching Center partners with special schools across Maharashtra, emphasizing physical development, while the Recreational Activity Club enhances self-confidence, creating a foundation for joyful living. United by the belief that “There is a Place in the Sun and a Hope for Everyone with Disability,” AWMH Maharashtra now unites over 450 institutions dedicated to intellectual and developmental disability advocacy.
Action
AWMH Maharashtra operates five early intervention and pre-schooling centers in Mumbai, providing regular therapy and special education services to an average of 75 children at Mulund & Dombivli centers.

To expand this initiative, AWMH plans to establish a “Counseling & Guidance Centre,” providing comprehensive preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic services under one roof. Specialists including gynecologists, pediatricians, neurologists, and therapists will address diverse needs. The center’s realization depends on donor contributions to secure premises, equipment, and operational funding, ensuring holistic care and support for these families.
