Safai Bank of India is an innovative initiative launched in 2018 by the Mumbai Sustainability Centre to tackle the growing problem of wrapper waste. F Read moreocusing on multi-layered packaging (MLP) — the most widely used packaging in FMCG products — Safai Bank offers an effective system to divert millions of waste items from landfills and littering. By mimicking the structure of a traditional bank, participants become "account holders," depositing clean wrapper waste at branches located in schools, residential areas, and workplaces. Branch coordinators ensure efficient collection, while the waste is responsibly processed in compliance with Waste Management Rules 2016. As a Section 8 non-profit, Safai Bank of India actively promotes sustainability by empowering communities to adopt eco-friendly practices, making sustainable waste management accessible and impactful for all stakeholders.

The Safai Bank collects MLP wrappers and packaging materials through collection points at schools, colleges, commercial complexes and residential areas, where people can deposit plastic wrappers.

Through its branches, the Safai Bank has prevented over 22 lakh wrappers and packets from entering landfills by collecting and sending them for co-processing in cement kilns.

Initiated by the Mumbai Sustainability Centre, program simplifies sustainability adoption for diverse stakeholders, empowering communities to actively participate in waste management and environmental conservation.
