    Description

Launched in April 2015, ‘Be a #FarmDost’ is an initiative designed to reconnect society with the invaluable contributions of farmers. Targeting urban and semi-urban audiences, the program seeks to foster empathy for farmers by encouraging individuals to experience farming, even on a small scale. The concept is rooted in the belief that understanding the effort required to grow a single crop on just one square foot of land can inspire greater appreciation for the hard work of farmers.

    Description

The United Nilgiris Conservation Society (UNCS), established in 2013, focuses on conserving and developing villages in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri district. This initiative exemplifies the transformative potential of government-private partnerships. Through the TAFE-UNCS collaboration, the goal was to develop and sustain 1,000 eco-villages by 2020, achieved by working directly with government agencies and local communities. Key accomplishments of the project include safeguarding the rights of tribal communities and facilitating individual land ownership under the Forest Rights Act.

The initiative also emphasizes creating employment opportunities for unemployed youth through career guidance, skill training, and job placements.

Special attention is given to empowering women by training them in various sustainable livelihoods such as beekeeping, tailoring, poultry farming, vermicomposting, mushroom cultivation, eco-tourism, pepper crushing, and coffee de-pulping. In addition to production skills, women are taught marketing strategies to enhance the sale of minor forest products like honey, soap nuts, and household items such as candles, areca nut plates, pain relief balms and oils, pickles, baskets, and brooms.
