    2016

The Fairfax India Charitable Foundation (FICF), established on November 9, 2016, in Mumbai, is a philanthropic initiative by Fairfax Financial Holding Read mores Limited, aimed at delivering measurable social impact among India's underserved communities. Under the leadership of CEO Abraham Alapatt, FICF has focused primarily on enhancing healthcare accessibility, particularly for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). Recognizing the alarming shortage of dialysis facilities—only about 25,000 machines available against a requirement of approximately 200,000—FICF launched a mission to deploy 1,000 dialysis machines across 250 district hospitals in India. This initiative, aligned with the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP), aims to provide free or subsidized dialysis services to economically disadvantaged populations, especially in rural and remote areas. By 2021-22, FICF had achieved over 70% of its deployment goal, significantly improving access to life-saving treatment and reducing the financial burden on patients. FICF operates through a unique Public-Private Partnership model, collaborating with government bodies, private sector partners, and donors such as Indian Oil Corporation Limited, H T Parekh Foundation, and SBI Mutual Funds. Notably, in partnership with Indian Oil and the Nagaland Government, FICF facilitated the installation of 11 haemodialysis machines in underserved districts, addressing critical healthcare gaps in the region.
