Free Libraries Network (FLN) is a collective that strengthens the accessibility and impact of free libraries by connecting practitioners and organisat Read moreions dedicated to open knowledge. It advocates for equal access to reading, learning, and information resources, asserting that free libraries are a fundamental right. Through collaboration, it facilitates the sharing of resources, best practices, and field knowledge while generating data-driven insights on the free library ecosystem in India. By fostering political consciousness and collective action, it supports policies that enhance access to knowledge. As a coalition rather than an operator, FLN unites free libraries, librarians, and activists across India and South Asia to build solidarity and promote inclusive library initiatives. It engages diverse stakeholders, including those outside the library sector, through its Friends of FLN initiative. Recognised internationally, it holds membership in IFLA alongside leading institutions, uniquely representing India’s grassroots, public-access libraries on a global platform.

Books for All
FLN’s ‘Books For All’ programme ensures that free libraries have diverse, high-quality collections that meet the linguistic and cultural needs of their communities. It supports grassroots libraries by assisting in book selection, connecting them with publishers, and facilitating access to discounts and free books. The programme also provides curated book boxes with at least 100 titles, shipped at no cost to member libraries. Through these efforts, it strengthens public access to reading materials, promotes informed curation, and advocates for equitable literary resources. Additionally, it encourages book donations, particularly for children and young adults, ensuring materials remain accessible and relevant. Fostering collaboration among librarians, publishers, and donors, it reinforces the role of free libraries in empowering communities with knowledge.

Library Curriculum
FLN’s library curriculum promotes equitable access to books, reading, and information, particularly for communities historically excluded from such resources. It develops structured programmes, activities, and best practices within a justice-driven framework to empower libraries as spaces for education, dialogue, and inclusivity. Through advocacy, documentation, and resource-sharing, it supports grassroots library practitioners in building effective and accessible library environments. The initiative fosters leadership development, community engagement, and collaborative knowledge-sharing while ensuring libraries remain anti-caste, gender-inclusive, and open to all socio-economic backgrounds. By decentralising curriculum development and providing open-access resources, it strengthens free libraries as essential institutions for learning and social change.
