Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC), located in Thalassery, Kerala, is an autonomous institution under the Health & Family Welfare Department of the Governmen Read moret of Kerala. Founded in 2001, its mission is to provide comprehensive oncology care, research, and education to the northern regions of Kerala and neighboring areas, including parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory of Mahe. With a vision to become a centre of international standards, MCC functions as a tertiary cancer centre committed to clinical excellence, advanced research, and academic training. MCC offers a full spectrum of oncologic services: high-end radiotherapy (including IMRT, IGRT, and brachytherapy), chemotherapy, surgical oncology, hematology, and palliative care. It also features advanced diagnostic and support facilities such as 4D CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, bone marrow transplantation, and a dedicated drug bank. On the academic front, MCC runs BSc programs in Medical Radiological Technology, along with fellowships in surgical oncology and high-precision radiotherapy. It collaborates with leading institutions—like Kannur University, C‑MET Thrissur, C‑DIT Thiruvananthapuram, and international partners—for multidisciplinary research.

Programs

  • Patient Welfare Fund

The Malabar Cancer Centre’s Patient Welfare Fund is managed by the Patient Welfare Committee, which oversees and coordinates various support services for needy patients undergoing cancer treatment. Financed through staff contributions and public donations, the fund covers medical expenses and investigations for patients not covered by government schemes. Beyond direct financial aid, the Centre also offers complimentary food, free transport, a drug bank, home-care services, and a library – all designed to alleviate the burdens faced by economically disadvantaged individuals.

  • Patients Free Food Scheme

Since November 2008, Malabar Cancer Centre–PGIOSR introduced the “Patients Free Food Scheme,” offering complimentary meals three times daily to all in-patients irrespective of their financial status. Supported by donations and philanthropic contributions, this initiative acknowledges that many patients come from lower socio-economic backgrounds and would otherwise struggle to afford nutritionally balanced meals. The scheme runs continuously, though increasing patient volumes are putting pressure on its funding. It is maintained through charitable giving—tax-deductible under Section 80G—to ensure sustainable access to food throughout the treatment period .
