The aim of this program is to facilitate social, emotional and cognitive development of children and youth from marginalised communities. We do this through safe spaces in the form of regular group sessions using arts-based practices, play, logical reasoning/critical thinking activities and community library. Children and youth from DNT communities are at risk of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs have been proven to negatively affect social, emotional and cognitive well-being and life outcomes. We aim to create safe spaces where the effects of ACEs can be mitigated through evidence-based interventions that create the opportunity to build empathy, a language to talk about emotions and experiences, social skills to develop friendships, form better interpersonal relationships and support systems, develop self-awareness and emotional regulation and enhance self-acceptance and self-esteem.

This program aims at empowering members of the communities to become Community Healers who can create safe spaces to work towards well-being using arts-based practices. The journey is as much one of personal transformation as it is one of gaining skills. The program aims to build self-esteem, empathy, confidence, assertiveness and resilience as a large part of the training is to provide a therapeutic space and focus on healing trauma as we believe that personal healing and transformation is a necessary and important step in becoming facilitators, especially in the context of marginalisation. This is a one-year journey that includes experiential and theoretical learning to build an understanding of mental health and well-being, equipping trainees in planning and facilitating arts-based practices, working on the self and one’s own self-care, and practising facilitation in Jumbish as co-facilitators to gain experience under supervision and eventually take independent community sessions.

Impact

Over 2 years we have worked with more than 180 children and youth who have directly benefitted from our sessions. We have engaged more than 600 members of the community in dialogue over various issues plaguing the community both from inside and outside of the community. We have created 8 artistic creations to talk about these issues within the community ranging from domestic violence to alcohol and substance abuse with the intention of driving the impact of these things on the mental health of the community. We have also trained 4 Community Healers who have started taking sessions with children in the community to work on the mental wellbeing of the children.
