Since
1970
The Voluntary Health Association of Assam (VHAA) initially began its mission of "making health a reality for the people of Assam" from a modest one-ro Read moreom office at Shanti Sadhana Ashram in Shantivan. As it embarked on this journey, it realized that this mission required a broader platform and the involvement of dedicated individuals, groups, and organisations to join the holistic health movement in the region. In 1989, a group of forward-thinking citizens and social activists in the region decided to establish a health movement to promote "health for non-health" and engage voluntary organisations, individuals, women's groups, youth organisations, and community-based organisations in addressing community health issues. VHAA registered as a non-profit organization under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, initiated a unique approach by networking with grassroots and other voluntary organisations, working towards making the holistic health movement a people's movement. Today, VHAA operates through a network of over 100 member organisations, reaching remote and challenging areas of Assam. Beyond its community health promotion efforts, VHAA has successfully nurtured these organisations to become credible, expert, and professional entities in their respective regions of operation. Over the years, VHAA has established itself as a pioneering organisation in the development sector, dedicated to a comprehensive approach to community health, guided by the principles of primary healthcare.
