In their efforts to promote livelihood initiatives, NIRDESH employs a community-driven structure involving Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Federations, establishing economic activities after rigorous leadership development and skilling/entrepreneurship training. With support from the Jharkhand Tribal Development Society, they operate in two districts in Jharkhand, where 500 SHGs and 68 Youth Groups have partnered with banks. 99% of these groups have received seed capital for various livelihood projects such as goat farming, poultry farming, piggery, vegetable cultivation, rabi cropping, SRI and wheat cropping, nutrition gardens, and fruit gardens. About 3,500 elected women representatives, known as Champion Leaders, have been empowered to address critical issues such as addiction, domestic violence, child marriage, child labour, and human trafficking. These leaders are also tasked with connecting marginalised communities with essential social entitlements and welfare schemes. Their roles extend to monitoring village-level institutions, including schools, Anganwadi centres, VHNDs, and health service centres. They report on the status of these institutions to the relevant departments and advocate for improved services. Additionally, their efforts are focused on alleviating rural and urban poverty among Scheduled Castes (SCs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), minorities, and those living below the poverty line.
