The Athletics Federation of India, known as AFI, is the top governing body responsible for overseeing athletics in India. It is affiliated with World Read moreAthletics, AAA, and the Indian Olympic Association. With 32 affiliated state and institutional units, AFI has a widespread presence. Established in 1946, AFI plays a vital role in Indian athletics. It organises the National Championships, conducts training for Indian Athletics National Campers, and selects teams for international events such as the Olympics, Asian Games, CWG, World Championships, and Asian Championships. AFI also hosts national and international championships, aiming to promote and popularize athletics, making it commercially appealing for the benefit of athletes and the sport itself. Additionally, AFI supports its state units, implementing coaching camps, coach training, and developmental initiatives to promote athletics at the grassroots level in India.

It hosts a range of significant domestic events, including the National Open Championships for seniors and juniors, the Federation Cup, National Inter-State Championships, National Open Race Walking Championships, National Cross Country Championships, Indian Grand Prix (comprising four legs), National Youth Championships, and various Zonal Meets, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talent and compete at different levels within India.

Junior Development Programme
Prioritizing the development of young athletes nationwide, it actively runs two distinctive programmes. The National Inter-District Juniors Athletics Meet (NID-JAM) stands out as a unique initiative, selecting champions from over 260 districts in India and providing them with a national platform to nurture their talents. Approximately 3,500 budding athletes benefit from this programme, with each district sending 13 athletes, a coach, and a manager after a qualification tournament within their district. This initiative has successfully conducted 12 editions of NID-JAM, involving a maximum of 3,500 athletes from 260 districts.
Additionally, the organisation collaborates with the IAAF to promote grassroots athletics through the IAAF-AFI Kids Athletics programme, launched in 2013. This initiative encourages schools and their students across 19 states in India to engage in physical activity and embrace athletics, fostering a culture of fitness and sportsmanship from a young age.
