Geographies Served

Programs

  • Primary schools

Classes are conducted in readily accessible outdoor areas located at the heart of the village. Recognizing that children often assist their families in income-generating activities during the day, the school day spans three hours and commences in the afternoon. The dedicated teachers, chosen by a village committee, are local youths who have completed at least 10th grade. They receive specialized training in pedagogy tailored to the unique requirements of rural children. To ensure educational excellence, the teachers participate in ongoing training sessions. The curriculum, consistent across all Ekal schools, encompasses core subjects such as language, arithmetic, and science. Additionally, students engage in physical education, health education, and creative arts.
The student body and teaching staff represent diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. The curriculum is adapted to honour local customs, employ local languages, and incorporate indigenous traditions.

  • Ekal on wheels

The Ekal on Wheels curriculum focuses on building technology skills and financial literacy, in addition to entrepreneurship training. Most students have never used computers before.
    Topics covered include:
    • General introduction to computers
    • Keyboard and digital illustration skills
    • MS Office and Open Office tools
    • Internet browsing
    • Email
    • Navigating websites
    • Digital banking
Graduates earn a certificate from IIT Bombay. With their digital skills, many go on to earn computer-related jobs or start businesses.

  • E-shiksha

E-Shiksha enhances Ekal's current curriculum by introducing interactive audio-visual content and digital learning experiences.
These tablets transform the learning process into an engaging and enjoyable journey for millions of rural students, offering a diverse range of educational resources. From interactive counting games to captivating animated stories, these tablets harness the power of educational technology to make learning an exciting endeavour.
Loaded with a plethora of entertaining and educational features, these tablets provide access to a wide array of resources, including engaging educational videos, enriching poems and short stories, opportunities for practicing both English and Hindi language skills, interactive math games, and much more.

  • Tele-medicine enhanced arogya

Tele-medicine enhanced Arogya, in addition to delivering high-quality healthcare to rural village communities, plays a pivotal role in educating individuals about illness prevention and the promotion of long-lasting wellness.
In a span of just three years, this initiative has achieved remarkable outcomes, including:
    1. Fostering improved hygienic practices among children.
    2. Encouraging the adoption of safe drinking water sources.
    3. Enhancing toilet facilities' availability and utilization.
    4. Substantially reducing the prevalence of water-borne diseases.
    5. Providing crucial treatment for anaemia in women and children.
    6. Promoting the use of soak pits and composting for safe waste disposal.
These achievements underscore TEA's commitment to preventative healthcare, thereby leaving a profound and enduring impact on the communities it serves.

  • Tailoring training

The process begins with aspiring tailors participating in a comprehensive three-month training program held at a local Gramothan Resource Center. These training sessions are led by experienced instructors and conducted in the local language, ensuring effective learning.
Following their training, these skilled individuals have the flexibility to choose from a range of avenues. These avenues include:
    1. Micro-Entrepreneurship: Many tailors opt to establish shops in their own villages. This not only contributes to the growth of rural economies but also creates opportunities for women to become micro-entrepreneurs in their communities.
    2. Manufacturing: Tailors also have the option to join manufacturing groups at their local Gramothan Resource Centers, where their skills can be harnessed for larger-scale market endeavors, opening doors to broader economic opportunities.
    3. Empowerment: These tailors can take initiative by initiating satellite training programs within their villages.
