Vision & Mission

Our VISION:

EVERY CHILD BELONGS TO A FAMILY
Family is the heart of society. Within a family each child is protected and enjoys a sense of belonging. Here, children learn values, share responsibilities and form life-long relationships. A family environment gives them a solid foundation on which to build their lives.

EVERY CHILD GROWS WITH LOVE
Through love and acceptance, emotional wounds are healed and confidence is built. Children learn to trust and believe in themselves and others. With this self-assurance each child can recognize and fulfill his or her potential.

EVERY CHILD GROWS WITH RESPECT
Each child’s voice is heard and taken seriously. Children participate in making decisions that affect their lives and are guided to take a leading role in their own development. The child grows with respect and dignity as a cherished member of his or her family and society.

EVERY CHILD GROWS WITH SECURITY
Children are protected from abuse, neglect and exploitation and are kept safe during natural disaster and war. Children have shelter, food, health care and education. These are the basic requirements for the sound development of all children.

Our MISSION:

The first SOS Children’s Village was founded by Hermann Gmeiner, an Austrian philanthropist , in 1949 in Imst, Austria. Since then, the organization has been active and expanding throughout the world. At present, SOS Children’s Villages is active in over 136 countries and territories with over 500 SOS Children’s Villages and 400 SOS Youth Facilities striving for the welfare of the children in need of care and protection.
In India, the organisation caters to over 25,000 children and there are 32 SOS Children’s Villages in 22 states in India.
As an independent non-governmental social development organisation:

We take action for children in need of care and protection.
We respect varying religions and cultures, and we work in communities where our mission can contribute to development.
We work in the spirit of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and we promote these rights through our flagship programmes, namely the Family Based Care and the Family Strengthening Programme.

With the SOS Children’s Village concept, our organisation has pioneered a family approach to the long-term care of orphaned and abandoned children in India.

Programs

  • Emergency Response Programme

The organisation is always ready to rescue and respond to emergencies, be they man-made or natural calamities. SOS Children’s Villages India rescues and rehabilitates children from disaster sites and tries to give them a normal life in their SOS Villages.

  • Education Programme

The children housed in SOS Villages are imparted education as per their capabilities and periodic assessments are conducted by academic mentors and co-workers. Learning plans and relevant study materials are prepared and reviewed every month and quarter. Digital literacy is encouraged in the SOS Village and each family home is equipped with a computer that the children can use at their leisure besides having a library consisting of academic as well as story books.

  • Child Care Programme

Each orphaned child that comes into the fold of the organisation is placed in one of its children’s villages spread across India. A village has twelve to fifteen homes each consisting of ten children living together as a family under the care of a mother figure. This SOS mother is entrusted with the responsibility to build close bonds with each child and runs the household independently.

With other children around, it is like a family atmosphere where each child contributes and takes part in the joys and sorrows of the household, growing up to become contributing members of society. Its family strengthening programme helps underprivileged families living around the SOS villages by supporting poor parents with alternative options of income so that the child is never left abandoned in future.

  • Family Like Care (Flc)

FAMILY LIKE CARE (FLC): A curative programme of SOS Children’s Villages of India that reaches out to over 6500 girls and boys in 32 Children’s Villages across India. Each Village has 12-15 Family Homes, with every home consisting of 8 children on an average along with an SOS Mother. Holistic development including education, nutrition, health and psychological development is taken care of till the time children are settled in their lives

  • Family Strengthening Programme (Fsp)

FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAMME (FSP): FSP is a preventive community intervention programme that covers over 17000 children at 32 locations across India. Designed to prevent children from losing parental care or from being abandoned, this programme runs in slums & rural areas, within a 30 km radius of an SOS Children’s Village. The beneficiaries of this program are children of the most vulnerable lot i.e. children of widows, single women, and Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. Spanning 3 to 5 years, the programme aims to enable families to move out of the vicious cycle of poverty towards greater dignity and self-reliance by ensuring education of children and income generating capacity development of the care givers

  • Kinship Care

Kinship Care involves children being cared for by their extended family or with close friends of the family known to the child

Theory of Change

We empower vulnerable children and youth to reach their full potential through a locally relevant Basket of care solutions which ensures self-reliance & social skills to navigate life in a caring, supportive & safe community.

SOS –India will achieve following goals during the reporting period
1. Expanding reach to include children & young people in need of care & protection through customized care solutions responding to their different situations.
2. Strategic collaborations and partnerships for wider visibility and impact.
3. “Safeguarding” as the core element of the organization’s actions and culture.

The organization has planned to expand its reach over the years with its basket of care services to provide need-based care in the best interest of the child with focus on community-based services. Climate change will be one of the focus areas in the FS expansion program. In order to align our program with the changing external vulnerabilities of children, who have lost parental care or at the risk of losing parental care, and are also focused by the govt, SOS India will extend its care services to the victims of abuse and children in street situation. These children and many other children require a place of safety for a short period of time, SOS India will reach out to such children through its short stay program. The organization aims to position itself as the leader among NGOs/CSO in providing customized care solutions to children among all the concerned stakeholders including our supporters and donors. The organization will evolve and enrich its basket of care solutions to reach additional children. SOS-India expands its partnership with the present and new state governments to provide technical support for need-based care solutions. SOS India will also be looking at setting up separate care facilities for boys and girls with special needs, who are above 18 years of age and need life time care. In addition, we will also be setting up retired mothers’ home and youth facilities at selected locations. The gatekeeping in FLC program will be reviewed from time to time and efforts will be to re-link the children with biological families. India is prone to natural calamities and in the recent past many such calamities required our immediate response for our existing program both in FS and FLC. We also reached out to women and children in the affected communities. Emergency program will continue to be one of the focus areas in the coming years.

The organization will forge strategic collaboration and partnership with provincial govt for implementation of FLC program, kinship, and foster care. We will work towards being preferred partner in alternative care in the country among other organizations working on alternative care. We will strengthen our engagement with external stakeholders, Child care Ingo’s through “Joining Forces”. We will partner with the corporate, Govt and like-minded NGOs for expanding our FS programs.

The organization embeds safeguarding as a practice and will further enhance its scope to include both tangible and non-tangible assets. The organization would strengthen its process and sensitize its co-workers to ensure safeguarding in every intervention that it takes. SOS-India will entirely align our care solutions in accordance with SOS’s care promises.

SOS-India plans to incorporate technology to strengthen its process, and ensure safeguarding, and efficient compliance. The organization would be able to harness the role of technology toward informed and quick decisions to complement its growth. To accelerate growth, the organization employs resource optimization intervention including human resources. Capacity building would be central to our approach which will prepare its resources to respond to the needs of all the stakeholders and prepare them for new/leadership roles. The organization will assess its fixed assets and evaluate their utility with respect to changing needs and requirement

The organization channels its fundraising efforts to other care solutions apart from Family Like Care and focuses on children, young people, and caregivers in the community.

Dr. Kakali Das Sarkar:Individual Donor

I am Dr. Kakali Das Sarkar associated with “SOS Children’s Villages of India” since
2014. Initially I sponsored one child but now I sponsoring ten children (for last few
years). This is the first time I visited Kolkata village and I am so happy to see this homely
atmosphere amidst nature.
Mr. Ikbal Hossain Khan showed one around the place and explained the functionary of
the village and how the children are groomed to become independent economically.
The concept of family is wonderful and it’s definitely beneficial for the upbringing of the
children.
I wish the “SOS Children’s Villages of India” all the best and hope that it will continue to
support & nurture the needy children & help them to become a good human being.
