Sulabh International Social Service Organisation is a well-known non-profit group working to end untouchability and improve the lives of manual scaven Read moregers, following Gandhian principles. It aims to remove social discrimination and has introduced affordable, eco-friendly toilets, especially the Sulabh Shauchalaya, a two-pit, pour-flush compost toilet. This toilet system, used in over 1.2 million homes across India, has helped free more than one million people from the inhumane job of manual scavenging. Sulabh also focuses on environmental protection and sustainable energy. Its 'pay-and-use' public toilet system has improved sanitation in urban slums and public areas, with over 8,000 such toilets built and maintained nationwide. Additionally, the organisation has set up nearly 200 biogas plants that turn human waste from public toilets into renewable energy.

Impact

Sulabh International Society has transformed sanitation for over 20 million people in India daily, installing more than 1.6 million household toilets, over 10,000 public toilets, and 20,000+ school toilets. It has built over 2,400 community toilets in slums, developed 12 modern rural villages, and established 10+ biogas plants. Through its initiatives, it has liberated and rehabilitated over 200,000 manual scavengers, led more than 310 urban slum campaigns on health, sanitation, and safe drinking water, and trained over 12,000 women volunteers to promote hygiene in underserved areas.

Programs

  • Sanitation Programme

For over five decades, Sulabh International has championed equitable sanitation and hygiene. As a key contributor to India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, it has built more than 1.6 million household toilets and earned the Gandhi Peace Prize in 2016. In rural areas, its community-led approach transformed sanitation in 1,749 towns. In urban spaces, over 10,641 “pay and use” public toilets now serve millions daily, including at 36 major railway stations.

  • Water For All

Sulabh developed an affordable drinking water solution, offering clean water at just ₹1 per litre. This initiative targets arsenic-affected regions in West Bengal and Bihar, utilising a surface water purification process. The approach focuses on decentralisation and community empowerment, enabling local villagers to manage and operate the system independently after proper training. The model ensures safe, accessible water while promoting self-reliance and health in underserved rural areas.
