Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) seeks to offer vocational education to individuals lacking literacy, recent learners, and those who have left school in ru Read moreral locales, by identifying skills pertinent to local markets. With a significant portion of India's populace residing in rural zones, JSS strives to enhance their economic standing by providing crucial skills training. Established as the Jan Shikshan Sansthan Scheme (previously known as Shramik Vidyapeeth) in 1967, it underwent renaming in 2000. Initially falling under the purview of the Ministry of Education, it now operates under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, working through NGOs nationwide. Presently, 290 JSSs function in 26 States and 7 Union Territories, annually benefiting approximately 400,000 individuals, with women constituting 85% of recipients. Governed by respective Boards of Management sanctioned by the Government of India, the scheme aims to deliver vocational skills informally to individuals aged 15-45, prioritizing women, SC, ST, minorities, and other marginalized segments, with a focus on underserved areas and populations lacking adequate infrastructure and resources.
