Malaria Control Program

Kalahandi
States
Odisha
According to the World Malaria Report 2021, India accounted for 83% of cases in the South-East Asian region. The state of Orissa, with a population of 36.7 million (3.5%), contributes about 25% of the total annual malaria cases, nearly 20–30% of deaths caused by malaria in India. The biggest burden of malaria in India is borne by the most backward, poor, and remote parts of the country, especially the tribal pockets of the country. Swasthya Swaraj works in close collaboration with the District Malaria Control Program (NVBDCP). Swasthya Swaraj focus on dual approach - health center-based and community-based. A significant contributor to abortions, stillbirths, low birth weight and thereby increasing infant mortality is endemic malaria in the region. Recurrent malaria cases also adversely affect the nutritional status of the children. All the 79 Project villages were covered regularly for malaria and anaemia once every two months along with their nutrition status assessment. This is because this is the group vulnerable to repeated attacks of malaria. These are high endemic area for malaria with high parasite transmission rates. Malaria behaves differently in different areas- endemicity is the deciding factor. In high endemic areas, predominantly a disease of young children.
