The Community Seva Centre operates in the impoverished areas of Ariyankuppam Commune in Puducherry UT and the Kalvarayan hills in Tamil Nadu, covering Read more 56 nearby villages. Its primary focus is on promoting the development of women and children through diverse programmes, aligning with both Government and private initiatives to benefit underserved populations. The key areas of concentration include community organisation, health, and sanitation, spanning primary education, vocational training, nutrition, income generation, and micro-enterprise finance. The approach adopted is holistic, sustainable, and diversified, aiming to meet basic needs and foster self-sustainability for social, economic, and educational development in disadvantaged communities. The mission of the organisation is to establish communities with access to essential requirements, health services, education, and sustainable income. It gives priority to the development of children and youth, empowerment of women, and support for the elderly. Through initiatives such as schools, livelihood programmes, women's self-help groups, counselling centres, and awareness campaigns, the Community Seva Centre actively works towards the comprehensive development of rural and tribal communities. This includes efforts to counteract child marriages and enhance socio-economic statuses.

Impact

Community Seva Centre has positively impacted 56 villages, providing free crèches for 7,650 children, supporting 21,000 individuals through the Family Counseling Centre, offering free education to 3,550 tribal children, sheltering 750 children in the Seva Children Home, and benefiting 15,000 women through Seva Self-help Groups.

Programs

  • Holistic Development of Tribal Communities

Actively engaging in the comprehensive upliftment of tribal communities in Kalvarayan Hills, Community Seva Centre collaborates with local Government and international organisations to address the needs of the most vulnerable—children and elders. The organisation operates schools, including Seva Nursery and Primary School for free education with a focus on hygiene, and Seva Matriculation School for higher education and regular health check-ups. Additionally, it runs initiatives like the Children's Home for those facing family difficulties and an Integrated Home for lone elders, along with agricultural projects.

  • Programmes for Children

The organisation's primary goal is to alleviate the suffering of impoverished children below the poverty line, regardless of caste, colour, creed, or religion. Focused on providing quality education, preventing child labour, and offering basic education, priority is given to orphans, neglected, semi-orphans, and children from broken families. Orphaned children receive care until marriage, ensuring education, food, shelter, and character building for a successful life. The organisation manages 18 crèches under the Rajiv Gandhi National Creche Scheme in southern Pondicherry, providing learning, nutritional meals, and regular medical checkups for children aged 1 to 3 years.

  • Women Empowerment Programme

Community Seva Centre actively engages in women-focused initiatives, addressing various aspects of their well-being. Programmes include mother & child care, nutrition, immunization, family planning, and self-help groups (SHGs) with microfinance support. With over 220 SHGs, the organisation empowers women through loans for livelihood and business, fostering milch animal, goat rearing, and rabbit rearing. The Family Counselling Centre, operating since 2008, resolves family issues. Awareness programmes cover health, education, and family matters, benefiting over 320 families. Beautician courses and vocational training enhance skills, while the Seva Mahalir Sangamam Federation unites over 175 women's SHGs for collective empowerment.

  • Youth Empowerment Programmes

Committed to nurturing the next generation, its focus encompasses condensed courses, leadership training, sports, cultural activities, and vocational skills. Programmes include mobile phone service, tailoring, and computer education, offering practical skills for employment or entrepreneurship. Mobile phone service training equips individuals for jobs or starting their own repair centres. Tailoring empowers young women with versatile skills for personal use or potential business. Computer education, with various courses, reaches school-goers, homemakers, and unemployed youth, contributing to skill development and potential career opportunities. Driving training, awareness programmes and youth club activities further enrich the learning experience.

  • Programmes for Elders

Responding to societal changes such as urbanization and modernization, joint families have disintegrated, leaving older members neglected. Busy lives and insensitivity lead to elders being abandoned or voluntarily seeking refuge in old age homes. These homes serve as shelters for seniors facing solitude in their twilight years. Staff tend to their medical needs, provide nourishment, and assist with daily tasks. Recreational activities foster a sense of community, combating loneliness. Support for elders includes facilitating Government programs, operating old age homes, forming self-help groups, initiating income generation programmes, and organising medical support and camps.
